We usually post this on Monday, but fell behind due to the holidays. Here’s how the mediabase charts look today:
“Break Anotha”: 44 Pop (43), 218 Rhy (202), 300 HAC (-)

That vid is amazing!
As I said, I really like Blake’s quiet jazzier crooner side, I hope he gets to do more songs like this for his next album. He is really good playing the piano, he should showcase that talent more.
*crosses fingers for more of same*
Maybe he’ll do an acoustic, scaled back, more jazzy album someday. That would be sweet. He’d prolly think it was boring tho…and too easy to make! LOL. Suffering from the Paul McCartney syndrome, where things come just too easy, so he thinks it’s craap, right?? I suppose genius can afford to feel that way.
I want the velvety. Boring, stripped down, velvety vocals. sigh.
(Me wants it, my Presh-ussssssss…)
I like the jazzy croony side to Blake too, but he’d probably have a hard time getting Top 40-CHR airplay doing that style. Although Michael Buble and John Mayer get played on my HAC station, he might do well there.
I have to agree with Nic on this. It would make for a lovely CD, but airplay might be an issue, but yeah, I think even my HAC station would be more willing to play his music if he did a CD like that. :)
Kirsten was right on target with her math about the sales. Here is the official sales report from Ken Barnes at Idol Chatter.
Just posting this so you could see it officially. :)
Thanks Pam! 231,000 sounds pretty good to me.
I don’t think this would work with KMN and HMW, because they’re both in essence top 40 songs with crossover appeal. They’d be competing against each other on pop radio, and that would diminish their chart positions. Daughtry’s rock song wouldn’t have worked on many pop stations, while Over You and Home were too pop for rock stations. All of Blake’s songs would be marketed to top 40 first and foremost, I would think.
In retrospect, it is strange to me that they picked BA as the first single, which while a great song, only plays well in one format. I hope they realize (and I think they will) that even if BA never charts much higher, there are much safer songs they could release and that those songs are deserving of support.
I wouldn’t want a whole album of the soft jazzy stuff at this point in time, but a taste here and there is nice and his piano playing is lovely. I wonder if he’ll play piano or guitar along with some of the ADD ballads in concert?
Bully,
You are always welcome. *hugs*
Bully,
Probably both. You know, the “t-t-two sides of me…”
hey guys… it’s weird to me… but sadly KMN is one of my leasst favorites on the cd…. I’m just not into the Lupe Fiasco rappy thingymajig and I liked the song better without him… seriously I’m srry but I don’t like rap…
Ha I think Blake is just a hyperactive fun, very much into his career yet has fun while doing it and doesn’t want to forget his roots or forget how he got there type of guy….
Bunnies,
you’re probably right, unless they decided to release “Know My Name” to urban radio and “How Many Words” or another song to Top 40-HAC. The problem is that KMN DOES fit into Top 40.
It’s true that “Break Anotha” doesn’t seem to fit that well into a HAC format, now that I’ve checked out some HAC playlists. It seems strictly Top 40. Although that doesn’t explain why a Top 40 station like Z100 won’t play it…
I’ve always wonder that since BA was released to radio. If major stations are not playing it, the song will never become a hit. How come Tattoo and No Air were played on Z100 right off the bat? Just saying.
GRR… i GOT A DIGITAL CAMERA FOR CHRISTMAS.. NO CLUE HOW TO USE IT!!! (darn caps lock)
I love Blakes jazzy side but if he just did jazz he would get the same kind of thing that taylor gets. It kind of sad the the radio doesnt play all genres or let the big record companies dictate to them.
Aww Dani. If I can get the hang of (basically) working the digital camera, you sure can! LOL. Even if Blake DID think I was a moron, because the thing has an auto focus….and I couldn;t tell if I was using it right….*turns pink*
You know what I notice tho? Now that we are digital, I have NO photos. A quandry, yes.
Speaking of difficulties in technical additions– this new keyboard is really a trial. Typos typos, and it has these bells and whistles on it! I accidentally turned on mute last night! And it does have a way of eating posts. ah well.
(Just finished watching “Music and Lyric” with Hugh Grant, who is just deliciously witty in it. I just love that guy, so clever.)
Bully
thxs for the nice words!
I love music and lyrics!!! yes he is witty!!!
Not sure if this was already posted. Here’s a little online snippet from OK.

Hi Fans,
Just cruised through youtube to see what was new and found this review of B with the Bellingham, WA station KVOS doing an interview recorded just befor the Jingle bell bash.
This is one of the most real interviews that I have seen and you might enjoy it. I know he was a bit subdued because it was recorded like at 7 am or something like that.
Been reading all the concerns over sales and air play and can only say that Blake doesn’t seem to bothered by it and did say that a few singles will be getting released. I firmly believe that when the people “listen to all the songs” they will see how good they are. I am not too concerned about plays and believe that the plays will pick up.
Happy New Year too you all.
Don’t miss Leno.
d
By the way, do we have spell check here?

BigD,
Hey!! Happy New Year’s to you as well! Thanks so much for the video of the interview at the Bellingham station. I actually don’t mind a subdued Blake ;). Sometimes these serious interviews are the best because you can really see that he loves music. Heh, I’ve also said how the single sounds more funky punk-rockish performed live (ala RHCP) vs. the studio track.
About the airplay, I just don’t understand what’s going on with the major markets but it’s out of my hands. I am requesting “Break Anotha” at the stations and voting online for it, that’s all I can do. Of course we’re wondering what the next single will be :-).
Oh, I’m definitely going to catch Leno!
sup BigD sups!!!
happy new year, did you have a good new year did you get to go to new york and see your son perform live??? (umm.. I haven’t had mass amounts of sugar.. well maybe a little)
I emailed PHJ cuz he sent out emails so I replied I hope he replies back!!!
I’ll watch Leno if my parents let me… but I’m oly 13 so I might not get too.. (but you never know they let me watch when robin williams was on…)
Eeeeeeeee I get to see How Many Words live on Leno! Gasp!
Big D,
We love you and we love hearing from you. Even though the airplay situation gets discouraging at times, seeing B as happy as he is is very heartwarming to see. Thank you so much for posting the link to that interview. I had heard about that interview yesterday, but I just saw it now for the first time.
Please continue to stop by and visit us often! We love it when you visit! Don’t worry, I know that myself along with many others will be watching Leno. I’ve been looking forward to seeing B on Leno as a solo artist ever since he was on with J Speezy and Melinda and finally the dream has become a reality! Yay! :-D
I have to agree with Nic about the subdued B. It’s really great to see him in this kind of setting once in a while as far as interviews go. This is when you see how passionate for his music he truly is.
Absolutely. Conversational!Blake is really great to see, esp when he’s talking about stuff he likes, influences, etc. I am curious how all this will show with LateNight Shows, because he can be charming as hell. Personality means alot!
Yes, I’ll be watching Leno. I don’t normally watch those shows, but I will be for Blake.
Thanks BigD for coming and checking in with us. You know we appreciate that so much. :-) With the freezing New Years I have been fighting a cold, so I hope you all are doing alright there in the NW. (Snow snow snow! Skeery!)
Bully,
awwwww I didn’t know you had a cold. I’m sorry. I hope you feel better. I can’t do much, but I’ll send you (((hugs))) instead. :-D
*hugs Pam*
That bronchitis-thing and laryngitis really makes it hard to even breathe. I thought of Blake many a time, the past week with his recuping. But hey– I’m tough! :-) We’re slogging onward! Thanks tho, for your kindness.
More coffee needed, definitely.
Okay, I know this is totally random but we have a thing called “No Refusal Friday” here at one of our radio stations and I’ve been calling in every week for them to play Blake and I’ve yet to hear it. But…they were replaying people calling in today and some older guy called in and requested Blake Lewis…They haven’t played it yet but I’m crossing my fingers that they do!!!! I guess there are more people in Indianapols(other than little teen girls) that like Blake! Woo-Hoo, Can’t waite for him to have a tour!!!
p.s. ironically, their playing jordin right now lol..I love her too though!
Not random at all ;).
Interesting how various people are requesting the song and it’s not being played in bigger markets, however. Indianapolis is the 12th largest city in the U.S.
And yet, I called an requested Blake and she was like “well we don’t have BA but I can play shot to the heart” I was like ahhhh but I was okay with it as long as they played Blake…I really hope they start playing more blake on the radio though! I just love his voice.
Nic, you mention Indy being the 12th largest city…I didn’t know that…very surprising to me because it gets really boring here haha.
Dani,
yes, Indianapolis really IS that big, hee! Over 700,000 people in the actual city itself :). And that doesn’t include the surrounding suburbs.
It’d be great if Blake could get some spins in those sorts of markets but so far most aren’t playing the song. I’m still wondering what “we don’t have it” means (program director won’t put it on playlist or label won’t push it?).
yeah I’m not sure what “we don’t have it” means either…its sad either way you put it! Hopefully the do get it soon though
I don’t think it has anything to do with the label not pushing it IMO. Since the decision is ultimately up to program directors, I’m thinking that’s what the road block might be to the song not being played but who knows.
