DANG. I was hoping by the time I got home we’d have some news. I hit USA Today’s Idol Chatter blog first, because they usually have someone blogging live from opening night, but it looks like no live blogging there until the Jacksonville show on Sunday night.

Here’s a little tidbit from Phil Stacey about the tour, from jacksonville.com:

What we should we expect?

The concert will run about two hours, and each performer will sing only one song alone. And there are only a couple of songs featuring everyone. Mostly, there will be a lot of duos and trios. The guys get together for their own band.

I have to say, the thought of only one Blake solo disappoints me. One of the reasons I was glad Blake made it to 2nd place was because he’d get more songs on tour…so I thought. I feel kinda ripped off. :\ Maybe I’ll feel better after reading some recaps of how it all went tonight.

Here’s a comment from Phil about Blake:

“The best performance I saw out of Blake wasn’t on the show. We were watching a preview for the Simpsons movie and the executive producer came in and asked Blake to sing Papa Was a Rolling Stone. We looked at each other said ‘That dude can win this.’ It had nothing to do with beat boxing.” (Tacoma, Wash., July 27)

*talks to self*

Okay, whew…Blake’s got more than one song. Some details from a poster a TWOP getting a cellcert:

“She Will Be Loved”
“You Give Love A Bad Name”
“Time Of The Season”

(so far)

I’m ecstatic that he’s doing TOTS! I wasn’t sure we’d ever see that one again.

3. 3 star Jul 6th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

More fun details from TWOP!

He opens the whole show with this little janior routine. I think she said he walks out on stage with a hat on, janitor costume, I think fake moustache?! Anyway he’s sweeping, then the music starts “Lets Get It Started” begins, he rips off the janitors costume and everyone comes out on stage dancing and performing the song.

4. 4 Michelle Jul 6th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Hee, I’m also tracking the updates at TWoP. I wonder which of the songs were duets, etc. and which was the solo?

YES for ToTS!!!

5. 5 bean99 Jul 6th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Here’s a description of what he’s wearing:

She said he looks unbelievable! Fitted suit, lime green shirt, tie, took the jacket off for SWBL, she keeps saying he looks amazing! Hair is light, but not quite blonde, super short in the back! Uh I think she’s moaning as she keeps saying how super pretty he is! The Blake shirt for sale is super cute and the tour program is super pretty.

Hee, I’m also tracking the updates at TWoP. I wonder which of the songs were duets, etc. and which was the solo?

I don’t know Michelle! I wonder if they were all solos? I’m sure if part of it was the Cake duet it would’ve been mentioned.

At any rate, it sounds like Blake’s getting a good amount of stagetime so that makes me happy! :D

8. 8 Michelle Jul 6th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

aaah Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” is the guyband song! and Blake on electric guitar!!!

DAMN. I may turn into a Caker yet.

I will stay strong. I will stay strong.

12. 12 Jenny Jul 6th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Wow I guess Chris R. really was their Chosen One all along. This is his concert tonight. He’s all over it including doing one of Blake’s songs. How nice.

13. 13 star Jul 6th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Jenny are you kidding me?! Sounds like Blake’s getting plenty of time onstage to me. They did “Virtual Insanity” together as part of a medley.

What has Chris R done that is Blake’s signature? *confused* I’m sure some of the “Chris” references in the setlist above are Chris Sligh.

14. 14 Michelle Jul 6th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Well, the setlist info came from a Chris Rich forum…could be their source was focused on anything Chris was in :)

More:
Chris, Haley & Sanjaya - Life Is a Highway
Jordin: Heartbreaker, You Were Meant For Me, Broken Wing, This Is My Now
Group number: reprise of solos

15. 15 Jenny Jul 6th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Chris sang Maroon 5’s This Love and he was the center of practically every trio in the first half, including a duet with Jordin.

16. 16 Michelle Jul 6th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

2nd half setlist:

Crazy - Guys

Who Knew - Gina

Virtual Insanity, Geek in the Pink - Cake

I Will Always Love You - Lakisha

Killing Me Softly - Melinda (with Blake beat boxing and Chris singing towards the end)

This Love - Chris

Another One Bites the Dust - Phil / Gina (?)

It’s Your Love - Sligh

Life is a Highway - Chris and Hayley

Natural Woman - Melinda

Ain’t No Other Man - All girls but Jordin

I Who Have Nothing - Jordin

Heartbreaker - Jordin

You Were Meant for Me - Jordin

Broken Wing - Jordin

Living on a Prayer - Jordin

This is My Now - Jordin

Snippets of different songs from each of their solos…

17. 17 star Jul 6th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Well we don’t have the full concert report yet, so let’s just chillax til we hear more. Did Chris R get three solos? Doubt it.

Meh. Sorry if I sound snippy but I had my fill of “Chris R is The True Chosen One” during the season. I didn’t believe it then, and I still don’t now.

Blake apparently sang “Killing Me Softly” with Melinda. Don’t think we got that posted earlier.

ETA: yay Michelle, thanks for the full setlist!

Erm, did we really need to hear Jordin sing “Living On A Prayer” again? Heh.

18. 18 Michelle Jul 6th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Yeah, pitchforks are peeping out at IDF because people are mad thinking their favorites were left out. We have to remember our sources are:

-a Chris fan
-a Blake fan

…and they are reporting during the show, so obviously we won’t have the complete details at this moment :)

19. 19 Jenny Jul 6th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

The full reports are starting to come in and I just spoke to my Melinda fan friend from her car. She said no doubt the focus was Jordin and Chris. Even when he wasn’t singing they had him front and center for group songs and two of the female trios. Poor Haley didn’t even get a solo. Even the Melinda/Blake duet Chris comes out at the end for. Its blatant and disgusting.

20. 20 star Jul 6th, 2007 at 11:36 pm

I don’t know, I see it as the first half is the Blake Showcase and the second half is the Jordin Showcase. The problem is the Jordin Showcase could do without “Living On A Prayer.” I mean, seriously? Let’s delete that and let Blake have one more solo - “When I Get You Alone” or “Somewhere Only We Know.”

I’ll say one more thing about Chris R and then I’ll STFU - if TPTB are so in love with him, they would’ve put his mug in People’s Hottest Bachelors issue instead of Blake.

21. 21 Fiona Lattimer Jul 6th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

I am so excited for the Gnarles Barkley band thing..I love that song…Nice.

I will be posting about the Nashville show in 5 days…as I believe you will be too Star…correct?

Exciting.

22. 22 RollTide Jul 6th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Woohoo! I was hoping for some spoilers tonight. I’ll be away from the computer from tomorrow until I go next Thursday. Now at least I’ll know what to expect. :) And glad the Blake shirt is pretty since my girls both want one. I’m so excited about Blake’s songs. :)

But ugh at all the Jordin songs. I am not looking forward to sitting through that many of her songs. That will be kind of a let down after all the stuff at the beginning going on. And that stinks that they didn’t give Haley a solo. I mean I’m no fan, but she deserves a solo like everyone else. Oh well - I’m super hyped about Blake. 6 days………………

23. 23 Laura Jul 7th, 2007 at 12:36 am

Per the IDF forum:

Everyone got a solo. Sligh(Typical), Gina(Who Knew), Phil(Blaze of Glory), Haley(God Fearing Women Sing the Blues), Sanjaya(some MJ song), Lakisha(I Will Always Love You), Richie(This Love), Melinda(Natural Woman). Blake and Jordin got a few solos.

Gina was in about 75% of the show. She was in more songs than any other girl, if I remember correctly. Chris was in about 75% of the show also. Him & Gina got A LOT of performance time. If Chris wasn’t singing, he was being used as man meat between Jordin, Lakisha and Melinda in their performances.

Pics!!!!!!! About four pics are available on pg 626 of TWOP. I didn’t want to link them here since I didn’t take them…

Revised setlist copied from TWOP/other source:

Let’s Get It Started - all
Baby Love - LaKisha and Melinda
She Will Be Loved - Blake Lewis
You Give Love A Bad Name - Blake Lewis
Proud Mary - Melinda & Sanjaya
This Will Be?? - Melinda, Jordin & Chris
Killing Me Softly - Blake Lewis & Melinda
This Love - Chris Richardson
Blaze of Glory - Phil
The Way You Make Me Feel - Sanjaya
When God Fearin Women Get the Blues - Haley
America The Beautiful - Phil, Haley, Gina and LaKisha
Another One Bites The Dust - Chris Sligh, Haley, Melinda and Gina
What Hurts The Most - Chris R and Jordin
Who Knew - Gina
Our Love/My Love - Phil & Gina
Life Is A Highway - Haley, Chris R & Sanjaya
Lady Marmalade - Haley, Gina and LaKisha
I Will Always Love You - LaKisha
Aint No Other Man - Gina, Melinda, LaKisha and Haley
I Who Have Nothing - Jordin
You Were Meant For Me - Jordin
A Broken Wing - Jordin
This Is My Now - Jordin
Livin On A Prayer - Jordin
Solo Reminders (all sing about 30 seconds of their solo)

24. 24 ld Jul 7th, 2007 at 2:03 am

I don’t get the whole Chris Rich thing. Singing This Love?? Eww. Sorry, I think he’s a cutie and sweet as can be but I’ve never been a fan of his voice. Besides, Blake sang that song sooooo great! I like Jordin but “Livin on a Prayer”? That’s got to be horrid!! Oh well, I’ll be lovin’ every second of Blake. I know the above list can’t be complete because it doesn’t include TOTS and I know he sings that!

25. 25 Laura Jul 7th, 2007 at 2:14 am

Just as soon as I had posted it, and realized I couldn’t edit that same post again, I reloaded the TWOP page that it was on and the girl that had posted it had edited her post saying that she was going to look for a different, updated list since it didn’t match the previous setlist. Ah well, I figure we’ll get it sooner or later! Oh, and I’m SOOOO looking forward to TOTS! :blush_tb:

26. 26 Memo Jul 7th, 2007 at 4:04 am

THE ONLY THING I CARE ABOUT IS BLAKE NOT CHRIS RICH I DONT LIKE HIM OR JORDIN PHIL OR ANYONE ELSE TO ME ITS ALL ABOUT BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE BLAKE HUP TO SEE MORE PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

27. 27 Lisa Jul 7th, 2007 at 9:23 am

I’ve never been to an AI concert before but I’ve seen a couple of mentions this morning where people said the runner-up has never been featured in the first half of the show, that its always right before the winner comes out. So they shove all his solos to the beginning, they have him make his intro in some bizarre way in a tacky disguise so early in the show while some people may not even be fully seated yet, the only time he’s on stage he’s alone is either by himself, or with Melinda and Chris. Chris gets featured 9 times. But I suppose just like with the not having a record label mess everything is normal here?

28. 28 bean99 Jul 7th, 2007 at 10:42 am

I went to last season’s concert and the way they did it was everyone came out in order of them being cut from the show. In the first half, they had one solo and one duet with the next person. The 2nd half started with Chris Daughtry #4 and followed the same format but they got more songs. It ended with Taylor in several songs (hated that part) and a group number. I like the sound of this format much better. They had some strong singers go home early so nice they got to do more. I don’t see anything wrong with Blake being featured in the 1st half but would like to see him so more in the 2nd. I do think there could be some changes along the way. I can’t believe that Melinda at #3 is being featured less than #5 Chris R. I must admit to being surprised that there’s not more Sanjaya. I thought for sure there’d be a faux hawk.

I just read Never Knew’s recap and she didn’t think our Blake got shafted at all. I can’t put the link in during editing but it’s at Twop.

29. 29 star Jul 7th, 2007 at 11:43 am

Thanks for the heads up, bean. Here’s never knew’s recap:

Now, for the record: honestly, there are very few people in this world who could possibly adore Blake Lewis as much as I do, and I will say that I don’t think he got shafted at all as far as stage time. I mean, I would love all bshorty all the time, but I left feeling totally satisfied (that’s what she said). So, like, don’t stress!

The janitor bit was rad (and the person posting about the fight and Blake’s “attitude” missed the point - he was very much in character and performing) - he was seriously on stage with that broom for a good ten minutes before the show started, then the band came out and he walked over and did something to like a giant circuit breaker, ripped off his wig and ’stache and coveralls and just planted himself dead center on stage. It was seriously fucking awesome. And as you guys know, he did TOTS (tons of crazy bshorty hippie dancing, super smooth and sexy performance), SWBL (technical problems like whoa, I could tell he was pissed but he played it off well) and YGLABN which was sick. He did a super-extended beatbox intro, at least a minute, and his beatboxing during the song itself was crazy awesome.

Then the guys band thing, which was actually kind of a hot mess for at least the first half of it, but he was front and center and so pretty. (And I caught Chris Rich’s drumstick, squee! While taking video and holding my phone, mind you. No clue how I pulled that off. And fyi, that dude is seriously gorgeous in person.)

“Killing Me Softly” was amazing; Melinda starts out, and she’s in this gorgeous dress and you think it’s going to be a straight version, and then you hear these beats coming from somewhere, and it shifts into the Fugees version. Blake was doing all his entendres while Melinda sang, and then he came down from the risers and sang with her; they were all in each others faces, he eyefucked the shit out of her, and they sounded gorgeous. I am more than a little bit in love with that performance.

The Cake section you guys have heard plenty about - it was really fun, the guys both really worked the stage and you could tell they were having a BLAST. So cute!

And apparently the lighting did funny things to his head; zeusdog and I both thought his hair was blonde, oops!

She sounds pretty satisfied. :) I’ve gone to the concert for the last two season and this format is totally different from those two, so I can’t wait to see it myself.

Lisa:

So they shove all his solos to the beginning, they have him make his intro in some bizarre way in a tacky disguise so early in the show while some people may not even be fully seated yet,

When I heard about this, my reaction was “That’s SO Blake.” Jimmie Walker Blue anyone?

Clearly, I’m a glass half-full person, and some of you are glass half-empties. And that’s fine. All opinions are welcome here! To me it seems like Melinda is the one getting the shaft.

I’m going to look around and see if I can find anything cool from last night to post out front!

30. 30 star Jul 7th, 2007 at 12:05 pm

Real quick, this has nothing to do with two-er but here’s a video of Blake in studio with One Republic…that is one of the groups Blake’s friends mentioned in their chat this past week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=augmNUyVjiI

And I got a text from Sarah earlier saying they saw Blake in their hotel lobby, wearing his ugly hat. LOL.

31. 31 Jenny Jul 7th, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Its not a matter of seeing the glass half full its a matter of pointing out something thats there. I just watched the Cake duet and even that they made all about Chris. Chris starts the medley off alone, then Blake comes out, Geek In The Pink is Chris singing with Blake beatboxing. I will agree with you that Melinda definitely got shafted. My friend that attended last night loves her to death and she was furious when she left. She said Gina got more performance time.

32. 32 star Jul 7th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

I just watched the Cake duet and even that they made all about Chris. Chris starts the medley off alone, then Blake comes out, Geek In The Pink is Chris singing with Blake beatboxing.

Yeah but I’m also reading that Blake sings the verses on “Virtual Insanity” with Chris only joining in for the chorus…

33. 33 bean99 Jul 7th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

I’m with Star on this one. I guess the Blake fans will just have to make sure they get there on time to see the janitor opening. It sounds to me like Blake is out there quite a bit and I just wish I could see it.

34. 34 star Jul 7th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Just added a photo from last night’s concert, courtesy The Blaker Girls myspace. :)

ETA er, wait actually I think it’s from Cake Fansite but the Blaker Girls put it on their myspace.

35. 35 Sarah Jul 9th, 2007 at 10:52 am

Melinda, Lakisha, and Phil are the ones who got shafted, not Blake. Blake had plenty of performance time, and everything worked well together. The show was very cohesive.
