Ryan Tedder & OneRepublic

We thought it was time to dedicate a post to a man who’s spent a lot of time with Blake in the recording studio over the last several months…Ryan Tedder! Dreaming Out Loud, the debut album from Ryan’s band OneRepublic, is in stores today! This record has been a long time coming for 1R. It all started when Ryan participated in a talent search contest Lance Bass (seriously!!!) conducted on MTV’s TRL in 2000…Ryan ended up winning the viewer voted-on competition, but more importantly managed to catch the attention of uberproducer Timbaland in the process. “He sounded like John Mayer, but better,” Timbaland recently told Rolling Stone magazine. Check out Ryan’s breakthrough performance here!

Read more after the jump!

So, I had this whole history of Ryan and 1R written, but last night this fabulous article from the LA Times appeared, and it’s way better than what I put together, so read it! Then take a moment to enjoy this live performance of “Apologize” from an August episode of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance.

Timbaland’s remix of “Apologize” caught fire on radio and just broke the record for the most spins in a week (10,331). Thanks to its tremendous success, OneRepublic is now in a great position to launch the first single off of Dreaming Out Loud, “Stop & Stare,” a tune which chronicles the band’s rocky journey. Listen to it here:

OneRepublic is Ryan’s main priority but he continues to write and produce music for other artists, and much of his work is currently popping up all over the charts worldwide. Ryan is totes on Team Plaid! He wrote and produced “Bleeding Love,” the first single for Simon Cowell’s darling Leona Lewis, which has spent four straight weeks at number one in the UK and helped make Leona’s Spirit the fastest-selling debut in British history. Ryan has another song on Leona’s album called “Take A Bow” that I personally LOVE. Here in the US, songs he’s worked on with other artists are scattered all over the iTunes Top 100, including Jennifer Lopez’s “Do It Well,” Ashley Tisdale’s “He Said She Said,” Natasha Bedingfield’s “Love Like This,” and of course Blake’s “Break Anotha.” Seven more tracks Ryan co-wrote and produced will be on Audio Daydream, including “Know My Name” and “Gots To Get Her.” Wondering exactly what it means to produce an artist? Well, it’s a little more involved than what Timbaland does in the “Apologize” music video, hee! Take a peek at Ryan in the studio with new artist Robyn Janelle…

If you enjoy Ryan’s work and what you’ve heard of OneRepublic so far, pick up Dreaming Out Loud today, and catch 1R on tour in 2008! In the meantime, you can see them perform on TRL next Monday, 11/26! Talk about coming full circle! We’ll leave you with this fun little clip of 1R covering Rihanna’s “Umbrella” in concert…

This guy really is taking off in his career. No telling how big he’s gonna get, before Springtime hits. Thanks for the great post and vids!! *runs to watch Umbrella, just for fun*

  2. 2 Karen Nov 20th, 2007 at 10:02 am

Wow. His version of Umbrella is really impressive. I like Rhianna’s version better. But the 1R version is definitely better than Chris Brown’s version.

Thanks for sharing. I think I will buy 1R’s and Blake’s CD together.

Found it interesting that when I checked iTunes early this morning 1R was available - but Jordin’s CD wasn’t. I hope Blake’s CD follows the 1R model.

  4. 4 star Nov 20th, 2007 at 10:26 am

Jordin’s should be on there…you may have to search for it though. It doesn’t look like they put her on the front page.

Anyway, back to 1R - theirs is only 7.99 on iTunes, and it comes with bonus live performance videos!

“He Said She Said” = major guilty pleasure of mine. :)

Under new releases at I-tunes, if you click on the “Pop” tab, then you will see Jordin’s CD. That that the way you see BA on I-tunes, by clicking on the “pop” tab. :smile1_tb:

i’m so happy for ryan’s success… i was so impressed with him on that silly talent show thing back in the day, and then he just seemed to vanish. what a pleasant surprise to see him make it back around to the top. good for him.

  7. 7 Christina Nov 20th, 2007 at 11:11 am

Was so looking forward to 1R’s album this morning! I got up early to go and get it and I walk into the store and what do I find…Last weeks stuff still out under the “new releases” =0( I guess I am going else where on my lunch break…I will get it darn it haha!

  8. 8 ld Nov 20th, 2007 at 11:27 am

Thanks for putting this up! I actually like this better than Rhianna’s. Did Ryan write the song? I actually think more stuff popped up as I was writing this - gotta go check it out!

  9. 9 Bouffe Nov 20th, 2007 at 11:29 am

Wow, star!!!! Amazing write-up on Ryan and 1R. These guys are going to be HUGE, I tell you. Apologize was #1 all over the world, and they didn’t even had an album out, imagine that! Stop and Stare is gorgeous, it’ll take off, too.

His performance on the game show was great, wow he gave me chills. And their Umbrella? I like it much better than Rhianna’s…..

Thank you so much for this post! And yes everyone, go buy 1R’s Dreaming Out Loud!!!!

  10. 10 ld Nov 20th, 2007 at 11:35 am

Sorry about the previous post. I clicked on Ryan’s breakout performance and got “Umberella” instead of “The Look”. Love Ryan - his music, his voice. I’m glad Blake gets to work with such talented people! I’ll be sure to buy my copy of 1R’s new cd!

  11. 11 Kilroy Nov 20th, 2007 at 11:35 am

I downloaded Dreaming Out Loud last night and am looking forward to hearing it. Love the Catholic altar candles in the bonus videos on itunes.

Thanks, star, for all this info. Talk about work ethic. No wonder Ryan and Blake worked well together. I have to say I prefer Blake’s voice to Ryan’s but “Apologize” is an amazing song that really shows it off. If they allow it, I bet it’ll become an AI staple soon.

  12. 12 Butet Nov 20th, 2007 at 12:23 pm

    Thanks star!

I love 1R, and LUB Ryan Tedder.

Bought the album right at midnight last night (or is it this morning?) and loved it rught away. Stop and Stare is one of my personal faves!

“He Said She Said” = major guilty pleasure of mine. :)

Star: I’m with you there. I was embarssed to say I actually bought the album. It sorta reminds me of Britney pre-meltdown.

  13. 13 Pam Nov 20th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

Wow! I like what I’m hearing of “Stop and Stare”! I might just have to purchase that CD on i-tunes! I’m beginning to love 1R more and more all the time!

  14. 14 Nic Nov 20th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

For those of you who have it, what sort of music is on the OneRepublic CD? Is it alternative rock like “Apologize,” or something else? I might consider buying it.

  15. 15 greeneyesxo Nov 20th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Like 1R said in their myspace bulleting, if you like Apologize, you will like the rest of the abum.

I would absolutely reccommend buying the CD. Every song gave me the chills. You can really just FEEL the emotion Ryan is putting into it.

I got lucky enough to be invited to a private taping of The Sauce on FUSE next week when 1R is going to be on (a 35 person audience) and UGH I CAN’T WAIT. I’ve met them on numerous occasions and they are SO down to earth and sweet. They totally deserve success.

  16. 16 Christina Nov 20th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Okay, So I have the cd now and it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! Most definately if you like Apologize then you will like the whole cd!!! I also bought Jordin’s cd…haven’t gotten to it yet though…still listening to 1R’s!!!(Love)

  17. 17 Bouffe Nov 20th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

I can’t wait to get home and buy it!!!!!

I love Stop and Stare, I think it’s an excellent choice for a second single.

Pam - Go to their myspace page

    http://www.myspace.com/onerepublic

They have a snippet of Stop and Stare on there. It’ll give you an idea , maybe help determine if you like it or not. I personally think it’s pretty different than Apologize, but I love it just the same. That song, live??? TOTALLY KILLS.

greeneyesxo, wow!! I’m so jealous! You’ll have to swing back by here & tell us about it. I hope Blake goes on The Sauce when he’s doing his promotion too. Is Jared Cotter still the host?

Y’all should be able to play the full “Stop & Stare” up there…if it’s not working let me know.

ld, I don’t think Ryan wrote “Umbrella” but someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  20. 20 pj Nov 20th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Great job on the feature, Star. I can’t decide whether to stop by and get a physical copy on my way home or download it from iTunes. Decisions. Decisions.

  21. 21 maracaibo Nov 20th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

This album sounds great! I can’t wait to buy it.
I am so happy for Ryan and 1R. I hope they sell millions and become superstars! He is so talented.

  22. 22 hso Nov 20th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

i got the album earlier today!! it is really really good!!
i highly recommend it, they are amazing.

  23. 23 Nic Nov 20th, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Since Bouffe said other songs are not similar to “Apologize”, that’s why I asked what sort of genre. Alt rock with a pop edge for the most part? If so, I will definitely consider buying it.

  24. 24 speakergirl Nov 20th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

I’m on my 3rd time through of “dreaming out loud” at my desk here, and it’s really impressing me. My standout faves thus far are Stop and Stare; Goodbye, Apathy; and Tyrant. Don’t care for track 2 (Mercy) so I skipped it. That’s allowed, right? :D

  25. 25 Pam Nov 20th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Yeah, I think it’s ok to do that. :D

  26. 26 Christina Nov 20th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

Its all about personal opinion…can’t get mad at ya so ofcoarse its allowed=0)

  27. 27 star Nov 20th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

I heart “Say (All I Need)” even though it is pretty similar to “Apologize.”

  28. 28 Michelle Nov 20th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Nic there’s snippets at their amazon page so you can get an idea of the overall sound…to me it was like what you guessed, alt rock on the pop side. dude i can’t wait to get off work and go buy this!

  29. 29 Bully Nov 20th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

It’s scaring me…I’m a iTunes Newbie, and I’m already seeing the pros to downloading albums this way!! Yikes! Cheaper, faster, and do I need the pictures of the guys on this one? eh, notsomuch.

I might be doing the download, tonite. :-) What surprises me, is after the discussions we;ve had about Tedder and 1R that we’d need to give references as to his “sound”! LOL.

  30. 30 dani Nov 20th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Ilvoe he Said She said that s so cool that he wroted it cool!!! Awsomes!

  31. 31 Kim Nov 20th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I can’t wait to buy the album! In fact….I think I’ll go download now before class! tee hee.

so. Blake put up a banner on his site about getting Break Anotha as a ringtone by texting to a number…has anyone tried this? Did it work for you? Because I just did and it said there was an error and to try later…is it just me?

  32. 32 Laura Nov 20th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Currently downloading Dreaming Out Loud from iTunes. $7.99 and bonus vids? I just couldn’t resist! :-) I’ll probably end up gifting a couple hard copies, along with a couple hard copies (besides mine) of ADD! :-) I can’t wait to listen! :-)

  33. 33 star Nov 20th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Oh hee, I just clicked on one of the little thumbnails that show up along the bottom of the YouTube vids and it was this…OneRepublic on One Life To Live heh.

What surprises me, is after the discussions we;ve had about Tedder and 1R that we’d need to give references as to his “sound”! LOL.

That’s one thing I’ve noticed about Ryan’s music…I mean, some producers have a really recognizable, signature sound. Timbaland has his punchy beats, and Stargate have their recycled beats, and Butch Walker has this glam pop/rock sound, Mark Ronson is funky, old-school soul. But none of Ryan’s compositions sound totally alike. I never would’ve guessed “Love Like This” was something he did because it’s so reggae-sounding. He’s really versatile! What a good person to match up with Blake and his mixtape concept. :)

    Star,

That’s actually why I asked what I did, heh. I wasn’t sure if the 1R album was totally eclectic or not. I might go pick up the CD tomorrow while out shopping since you guys are giving it rave reviews :-).

  35. 35 RollTide Nov 20th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Great write-up, Star! I haven’t been home all day, but am about to download now. :)

I like their Umbrella better too. :)

OK, just downloaded, and since I had previously downloaded Apologize, I got to complete the album for only $7. Just an FYI for anyone who may have already downloaded that song. :)

  36. 36 Laura Nov 20th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

I just finished listening to the 1R album…and I love it. It will definitely be holding me over these two weeks until ADD hits the stores…and then I’ll have to switch to ADD for a while…but 1R will still be on my ‘frequently played’ list!

  37. 37 CJ Nov 21st, 2007 at 4:08 am

I’ve been following onerepublic for about 3 years…their success is well deserved and i’m sure they will have a long successful career.
