Mariah Night on Idol

Please don’t discuss the show in the daily chat to avoid spoiling our West coast friends. Feel free to discuss here, or even better, at MJ’s, the source for everything Idol.

Tonight, Mariah Carey mentors the kids and they tackle her songs. Should be eeeenteresting. Spoilers are at TMZ.

Those are some interesting song choices, if true. I like Carly’s. I’m interested to see how David Cook will do. According to this vid, David Cook’s terminally ill brother and his wife will be in the audience tonight and tomorrow night. Someone donated $40,000 dollars to make the trip possible.

Pam, I saw that and it melted my heart. I hope Idol doesn’t exploit that. I doubt David would want them to do that.

I hope they don’t either pj. I don’t think he would want them to either. It really touched me too. :)

I’m in total agreement with you..I’ve already informed all my co-workers my strategy to get Blake on my station…all of us will be requesting..different names..more of an impact instead of just me.. 10 requests are better than one…keep trying..they played HMW on XM at 10:30 AM today..that was good!!!!!!!!!better than 2 am in the morning..so XM has been playing HMW for the last 5 days..alright!

I loved David C’s performance. It was probably the best of the night for me. Kristy didn’t do that badly either. If I had to “give” the night to somebody, I’d give it to David C. :D

  7. 7 dani Apr 15th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

I thought that David A and C and carly did amazing!!! everyone else was ok i guess…(well actually I wasn’t paying attention much to everyone else… I know I’m biased!)

  8. 8 Bully Apr 15th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Oh, I just LOVED babyDavid and Brooke tonite. Brooke was all sparkly too! Nice! :-) babyDavid is like he’s this amazing thing…like a Josh Groban or something. Natural unbounded talent.
Brooke tho? So earnest, and fervent. I’m liking her again! Yay! *hugs her*

D Cook tho? I’m just not “getting” those performances the past two weeks. Idk.

I thought David Cook was amazing. Also when he got choked up at the end? That really got me. His voice is just insane.

BUT, he’s no Blake in terms of originality. Blake can’t even be contained in a genre! :biggrin_wp:

David Cook was amazing but you are right, in terms of originality, you are right he not on the same level as Blake where that is concerned. Nope, Blake can’t be put into a box. So true Chrissy! :D

I think Jason was pretty cool. ;)
    He’s mah favorite.

And Brooke did better than I heard from certain people.
I got home just after Idol ended, so I haven’t seen all the performances yet. lol.

I saw David A’s, and and he sang amazingly, but he doesn’t seem super different to me. I don’t know.. Just my opinion. Don’t hate me too much. :(

I shall go visit MJ’s and see the rest.

  12. 12 christina Apr 15th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Is there any way I could get a recap of this night to see their performances…I wasn’t able to get home in time and I do not have dvr?

  13. 13 Nikki Apr 15th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

OK, can’t believe I’m saying this, but I really liked Syesha and Kristy Lee tonight. I was impressed. They were pretty good and weren’t given their props. Brooke was alright, she wasn’t awful, but nothing special. I missed David A’s and Carly’s performance, so can’t say anything about them.

Sorry all, but I did not like David C’s performance. He sounded out of tune and I was baffled by the massive praise he got. It was wonderful though, that his brother got to be there to watch him perform. My heart goes out to him and the entire family.

My favorite of the night was Jason. :) He sang that really, really well. This guy is growing on me. I liked him enough in the begining, and thought his Hallelujah was spectacular. But it was when he did Travelin Through that he cemented his place as my fav this season, along with Carly. A shame that Randy doesn’t “get” him or whatever. Jason’s the one I look foward to and end up liking almost every week. Oh well, I think he’s really adorable, he makes me laugh.

As much as I like Jason, and Carly, I still don’t feel compelled to vote.

Christina, MJ has videos up. :D

I thought Jason was good too.

I thought we weren’t supposed to discuss the show in chat. I live on the East coast so I’m fine with the discussion myself, but I know some don’t see the show the same time that I do.

Oh…and B news. I found this about today’s visit to one of the stations and thought it was cute. Nice pics.

Well it just got through here on the west coast. David C was amazing so was jason. Carly was back to being herself, David A just sounds the same on every song amazing but no creativity I am spoiled I want some creativity on my Idol.

  23. 23 Charles C. Apr 16th, 2008 at 12:58 am

David Cook, Jason and Syesha (first time ever) were my favorites tonight. David A. sounded good, but he always sings those milquetoasty pageant songs. He may be 17, but still he’s getting to the point where he has to do more than just child singer songs. I wonder what Blake would have performed if there had been a Mariah night last year? He’s perverse enough to do something like Fantasy or Honey.

  24. 24 newduck Apr 16th, 2008 at 1:02 am

Oh no…he would so do Touch My Body.

  25. 25 Pam Apr 16th, 2008 at 1:04 am

That sounds more like the Blake we know. Hee!

  26. 26 ilikebunnies Apr 16th, 2008 at 1:37 am

I voted for Jason and DC. DC was a bit pitchy at the beginning, but he brought it home at the end, and I’ve always got to admire creativity. I look forward to what he’s going to do next. And he picked the best song of the night. It was really moving when he teared up, and I’m so glad his brother got to be there to watch him. I really feel for him and his family.

Jason is my fave. I love the colors in his voice and the way he kind of sings a story. I’m always captivated by every word out of his mouth, and any technical errors don’t seem to matter. It’s the weirdest thing though because I enjoy his singing about a trillion times more when I’m not watching him. I don’t get it, because he’s absolutely gorgeous and charming as hell, but his vocals sound better to me when I’m listening not watching.

The girls were all technically proficient, but they kind of blurred together for me. I can recognize that DA has a great voice, but all his performances seem the same to me and I start thinking about washing the dishes and writing term papers three lines into the song.

No performance on American Idol has never made me cry, but David Cook did last night. Seeing him touched and choked up at the end completely gutted me. What an emotional night for him.

To me, DC’s performance was so great because he infused that real, true, heartfelt emotion into it - nothing fake or poser-y about it. I said this on MJ’s but I’ll repeat here, there are a couple points in the song where his voice almost cracks and you think he’s about to lose it, but no, he soliders on and brings it home. I was really moved. I had to watch Jason’s performance a second time after I’d composed myself to be able to accurately critique it (he was my 2nd fave!).

Yeah, DC was a bit overpraised, but I agree with a poster at MJ’s and look at it this way - he’s had other performances in this competition deserving of that praise and didn’t get it. So I just can’t have a problem with it.

My heart broke in a million pieces seeing his brother in the audience. He’s really not in very good condition, but he was still there. There are no words for that.

  28. 28 Erinn Apr 16th, 2008 at 8:34 am

Um, apparently I can’t read at 7:30am. I’m the dork who voted for DC. I mean to say that I love the Cookie and he was awesome last night. Not note perfect, but heartfelt and an amazing(!) arrangement.

Can I change my vote to Syesha?

I also wanted to let you gals know I did try to do the scavenger hunt. I think I found about 90 of the images, but I was out late on the due date with my classmates and missed the deadline. Congrats to the winners!

  29. 29 Cindy Apr 16th, 2008 at 8:45 am

Oh no…he would so do Touch My Body.

    Oh snap.
IF Blake ever sang Touch My Body, millions of girls (and maybe some guys..) would faint. :)

  30. 30 Bully Apr 16th, 2008 at 9:37 am

I don’t get it, because he’s absolutely gorgeous and charming as hell, but his vocals sound better to me when I’m listening not watching.

I know what it is. It’s the way he looks, and the sublimal factors being transmitted from his “image” that are distracting you and making you think more than simply respond. When you aren’t “looking”, you can honestly respond to what it SOUNDS like, not what stimuli is prompting you to.
For example, SimonCowell has said that about people. You’ll see him turn away to listen, because he wants to know if it’s the way someone “looks” is selling a performance. If someone is extra attractive or dressed pretty, it can sway you. It can also be a detriment, but usually it;s the other way around. ie. Antonella last year, or maybe KLC this year.

I agree about Jason Castro’s performance btw. He has a wonderful way of expressing himself, that even on an audio bite comes thru as refreshing, somehow. It’ll wake me right up. He is pretty, but it is his voice that is the big sway.

It’s been the same for me. I’ve never cried over any Idol, but DC’s performance and choking up just brought me to tears. What an emotional night for him and his family.

I thought you guys might want to read this. It’s an article from the Los Angeles Times about last night’s performances.

  33. 33 Bully Apr 16th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Heh Pam! That guy from the LA Times wrote that piece as if it were a bit of precious History…or like the person who does all the Movie Trailer promos, the guy with the big deep voice? heehee!

bleh. I have a great capacity for corn and sentimental expression, but that is over the top even for ME.*eye roll*
