Here is concert recap from Tirtzah@ TWOP:

Hey all, I was at last night’s Nassau Coliseum concert, I’ll give you a quick recap. I went with my sister (who was pretty much there just to see Blake) and we had seat in the middle floor section, row 19. We had a pretty good view of the stage and were lucky that the people in front of us sat with their kids through the first half and disappeared for the second half. Blake was a security guy last night like never knew’s Rochester pics. I would say the audience was pretty full, about 3/4ths I would say. The middle section where I was stood for a good portion of the show (though they sat for most of the solo performances, Lakisha btw did not get a standing O for IWALY, I think because Long Island is as fully sick of that song as I am).

The audience was definitely there for Blake, even the slightest mention or indication that he might be coming up set of huge cheers (Phil, Sanjaya and Sligh did the beatboxing thing again during their patter). His set was of course awesome. He had a couple technical problem with the mic and they had to bring him a new mic stand for his beatboxing segment. He was completely hyperactive during the man band section bouncing all over the place and getting all up in Phil, CRich and Sligh’s nows. The Cake segment was adorable, especially this little bit where the did some identical choreography. CRich’s beatboxing was actually pretty impressive. They did Sexyback and the beatboxing battle was a tie. There were a bunch of times when Blake would start to sing and you couldn’t hear him over the cheers.

Overall the sound mix of the concert was pretty terrible. Also after we came back from scarfing down six dollar burgers during intermission we caught the distinct aroma of pot. It was pervasive throughout most of the second act. Oh, New York, even at an American Idol concert.

There was this really cute bit at the end when they all come out to do their reprises. Phil was wearing a cap, he tossed it to Sanjaya who perched it atop a giant fro wig he was sporting. They kept passing the hat between each person to come out. When Sligh came out he showed it to the camera and you could see it was hand decorated with Blake’s name on it (or possibly “Blakey”) so I assume someone in the audience must have given it to them at some point. Every Idol had the hat at some point except Lakisha and Jordin and then when they all came up from the floor at the end Blake stuck his butt out at the section of the audience the hat seemed to have originated from to show that he had it looped through his hanging suspenders/bondage strap on his pants. It was cute.

Here is another review from loseresque@ TWOP:

I was at the show last night as well. I didn’t have as close seats. Waves to Tirtzah way in the front…but I really liked my seats. They were at the furthest point from the stage but we saw everything fine and got to stay seated throughout it all. I enjoyed it a great deal. The only disappointing thing from Blake was Time of the Season. Maybe it was just me, but he sounded really bad and croaky on this (maybe with the tour and all the recording, he’s hurting his voice). I was almost embarrassed because I dragged my sister there for Blake and he started off on a bad foot. No worries though - SWBL was fabulous (total love) and so was YGLABN. My sister said it was the best part of the first half. He totally redeemed himself.

We both also loved the 2nd half a great deal - the Cake duet, Chris Richardson’s This Love, Lakisha’s IWALY, Life is a Highway…sad to say Melinda ranked among our least favorites. Anyway, Blake was a total spaz and we enjoyed his craziness in the boy band and the encore.

And Tirtzah’s right - any vague reference to Blake sent everyone in a tailspin. Just the mere mention of beatboxing and the crowd went wild. There were also a ton of Jordin fans.

    From goldcowbell@ TWOP:

i was also an nassau coliseum last night and thought the hat bit was adorable. It was so obvious that blake was the crowd favorite even more so than with daughtry last year i though..at the end when him and jordin took their final bows it was so apparent. Anyway Blake is just a god of sex, SWBL was one of the best things i’ve ever seen live. and judging from all the idols’ (except lakisha and jordin) revelling in wearing the hat- it really is true that EVERYONE LOVES BLAKE!

    From Donna All City@ TWOP:

Weeee! I had such an awesome time last night. We decided to stay at a hotel by the arena for the night since Bshorty’s hotness and awesomness prompted much boozing. I’m trying to think of things to add to what has been said already. Well Bshorty is shibby and the crowd lost their shit anytime he so much as breathed. The friend I took along who was not fangirly? She lost it somewhere between SWBL and the beatboxing in YGLABN. Biggest surprise for me was Phil. He blew me away on his all songs. I *heart* me some Mindy Doo and I was kind of underwhelmed by her. Chris R. REALLY is adorable and the Cake medley made me squee like a lunatic, but I was not struck over the head with love for him. I thought he did sounds miles better than he did on AI and I did like the duet with Jordin, but meh. I really disliked his This Love but he’s seriously adorable.

  5. 5 dani Aug 25th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

he had a hat on his butt???? that would have been funny to see!!!!

  6. 6 Kat Aug 25th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I was there as well! Had a great time even though my seats were kinda bad. I LOVED Blake’s segment. My friend was in the bathroom right before he came on and when he started to sing she said people were flying out of there like crazy to get back to see him. He is the obvious favorite here in NY.

The hat at the end said “I Love Blake” lol. At least that’s what I saw. ;)

It was a great show and I’m so glad I was able to see him perform!

Is there an offical review of this show yet?

I honestly haven’t seen a review of this show at all today. The only thing I’ve seen are the recaps and the one video that I posted and that’s it.

  10. 10 Laura Aug 25th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

There is a second concert in Long Island tonight, so perhaps the reviewers all decided to go tonight instead of last night…

They did that at my show too, but it makes it a bit hard to hear B. sometimes though.

  14. 14 Julie Aug 25th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

Hehehe love the response for B. Did everyone see him gracefully fall on his butt? Hes so cute, the only one who could fall like that and make it adorable..

Hey! I don’t want this to get lost in the shuffle, so I’ll post it here… Chris Rich revealed that the song Blake and he recorded in LA is called “What You Got to Lose?”
Chris is doing the background vocals.. I can’t wait to hear it!

Before the show started we saw Gina and Chris Rich behind the set and Gina started waving so the crowd was going crazy then Chris Rich started to wave and made every1 go insane. Blake played the security guard and i saw him right off the bat and i kept telling every1 that was Blake but no1 believed me. Ha showed them once he took that get-up off. hahaha
these girls that were waiting with us in the afternoon for the idols, made Blake a hat that was plaid and that said “i am Blake” and they threw it up on stage and Chris Rich caught it before the finale part fo the show…so then when everyone did like a “recap” on their sngs, Phill came out wqearing the hat, then threw it to Sanjaya who did his part and he wore the kat, then haley came out, then Chris Sligh came out andwas wearing the hat and shwoed the camera it said “i am blake” on it and then when Gina came out, he threw the hat to her and she wore it….then Chris Rich wore the hat, then Melinda wore the hat, then Blake finally wore the hat…so it was like a game of “pass the hat” on stage…it was really cute and i got a video of every1 wearing it. LOL
i was like “We heard your single” and she’s like “AHHH YOU HEARD IT???” and made an ‘eek’ face and did a nervous dance while covering her ears(like she did in her home coming video on idol) and i was like “AMAZING” and she squealed and shut her eyes with a huge smile and was like “thank you” and i’m like “seriously, it’s amazing, i can’t wait for your CD” and she’s like “awwwwwww thank you so much!!!
Then we hear a roar of screams and guess who it was? Yup. Mr. Blake Lewis had worked his way up the ramp to the fans but every1 was soooooooo crazy he didn’t stay long at all. he signed some stuff, took a few pictures, waved, but i guess every1 was too crazy for him

Imagine that. People? Going crazy for Blake? Nah. ;)

  18. 18 Julie Aug 26th, 2007 at 12:39 am

Aww, what a great recap! I can’t wait to see that video with all them wearing the hat. How cute Speezy is, flipping out over her single. Its really an awesome song. :)

    LOL!

Have you girls seen MJ’s Cleveland vids yet? I just finally saw them for the first time and they are fantastic with the exception of the sound being messed up at times.

    Thanks.

Here’s a review of the Long Island shows

Lewis, on the other hand, was far more uneven. He’s at his best reinterpreting songs, beatboxing through “You Give Love a Bad Name” or effortlessly supporting Chris Richardson’s set with sound effects and harmonies on “Virtual Insanity” or providing a Timbaland-worthy backdrop so Richardson could do “SexyBack.”

The problem at the Nassau Coliseum show, though, was that he couldn’t hit his high notes, his voice apparently worn out by touring or illness. The higher bits of “She Will Be Loved” were painful and when that blended into U2’s “With or Without You,” he had to scream to even come close to some notes.

I’m not sure that Blake’s voice is “worn out,” in fact I kind of doubt that it’s “worn out” but I do agree with this reviewer in that his voice sounds strained on the high note of WOWY. *ducks* I love Blake’s voice and the way he thinks through songs, but that one note makes me cringe every time I hear it. I really prefer the SWBL/WOWY of earlier stops of the tour, where that note was strong, but smooth and velvety. I don’t know if Blake’s purposely making that note rough-sounding, but I really wish he’d go back to smooth and velvety…

  25. 25 Michelle Aug 26th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Laura, ITA on *that one note*. I think it must be on purpose now because in the CA shows even when he had those really off nights in Anaheim and LA he didn’t do that.

  26. 26 Melissa Aug 26th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Laura, ITA on *that one note*. I think it must be on purpose now because in the CA shows even when he had those really off nights in Anaheim and LA he didn’t do that.

I remember seeing footage of the Anaheim show, and even though he was having an off night he still kick butt.

  27. 27 Michelle Aug 26th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I heart B but WOWY in Anaheim was not happening (and he knew it), and he actually cracked a note in LA. But hey, that’s why they’re called off nights :)

  28. 28 ld Aug 27th, 2007 at 11:36 am

I find all the comments about B’s voice on SWBL interesting. I saw him early on (Glendale Az) and he sounded fantastic. I have since looked at all the you tube videos and I actually love the way he’s changed it up. I think he is going for a more gruff tone. I like it!

  29. 29 Bully Aug 27th, 2007 at 11:38 am

I don’t have a problem if his voice cracks a bit– he always sounds good to me, honestly.

As for Anaheim, shoot, I still have that one saved in my Favorites!
The more personable he is, the better I like him.

  30. 30 Michelle Aug 27th, 2007 at 11:53 am

lol Bully I have all of the SWBLs I could find saved, good and, er, less good. I don’t expect perfection is all. Just an overall shibbiness level of “beyond mere mortals”. ;) That allows for an off night now and then.

  31. 31 Bully Aug 27th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

These last videos show his shibby-factor is increasing with audience exposure…ooo yeah! ;-) and when he plays eye-darts with the camera? WOWza.

New York Times didn’t care much for the Idol show, but they annoited Blake the star of the show. Here’s the review:

    August 27, 2007
Music Review | ‘American Idols Live!’
No Votes, Just Hugs, Smiles and Pop
    By KELEFA SANNEH
UNIONDALE, N.Y., Aug. 24 — If you’re starting to feel that this summer has been one long, hot slog, just be glad you’re not Jordin Sparks. Or Sanjaya Malakar. Or Melinda Doolittle. Or what’s-his-name, the bald one.
They and the other Season 6 finalists have spent the summer entertaining excitable young fans and patient parents on the “American Idols Live!” tour. It began in early July in Sunrise, Fla., and is scheduled to end in late September in Manchester, N.H. On Friday night the gang came here, to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum: one winner (Ms. Sparks) and nine losers, putting on a show that amounted to high-energy karaoke.
No doubt these well-worn songs are now deeply — perhaps pathologically — imprinted in the singers’ brains. Twenty years from now, if you snuck into Chris Richardson’s bedroom and cued up “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” he would probably immediately rise from his bed and start mouthing the words, throwing in a few Pavlovian dance moves for good measure.
“American Idol” once known for celebrating big ballads and big voices, seems less old-fashioned than it used to. As “Idol” veterans storm the pop charts, the franchise (which also includes a management company and record label) has become better integrated into the music industry, embracing the genre divisions that rule mainstream radio. The set list included Fall Out Boy, Martina McBride and Gnarls Barkley songs. And during the intermission, screens showed videos by successful — and genre-oriented — “Idol” alumni: the rocker Chris Daughtry, the country star Carrie Underwood, the R&B singer Fantasia. (Where was Kelly Clarkson, formerly the franchise’s star pupil?)
Bombastic belters haven’t been completely left behind: LaKisha Jones earned a big ovation for her lung-busting rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” But the clear star of this show was Blake Lewis, the man who brought beat-boxing to “American Idol.” (With any luck he’ll take it with him too.) Mr. Lewis got the loudest screams whenever he appeared, and he has the kind of voice — a little bit nasal, a little bit whiny — that will probably sound good on the radio. For a solo version of the Maroon 5 hit “She Will Be Loved,” he used a pedal to loop his beat-boxed rhythm; the result was a bit messy, but it was also a reminder that Mr. Lewis had been entertaining crowds (although small ones) before “Idol.”
And then there was Mr. Malakar, he of the flowing locks and less-than-overpowering voice. There’s a welcome hint of mischief in his famously bright smile, which looks even less innocent in person than it does on television. (Could it be that this self-described shy kid is also a shameless flirt?) If he seems more like an all-purpose celebrity than a world-class singer — well, that’s hardly bad news for his pop career.
As her reward for winning, Ms. Sparks got a solo showcase near the end. Her voice isn’t as rich as that of Ms. Doolittle (who had been an early favorite but finished third), but she’s clearly versatile, and she earned a big cheer by accompanying herself on acoustic guitar while singing the Jewel hit, “You Were Meant for Me.”
Oddly, there was no acknowledgment of the day’s biggest “Idol” news: a few hours before the concert Ms. Sparks’s first post-“Idol” single, a winsome love song called “Tattoo,” arrived on the Internet. This concert also made no mention of the uncertain future these singers face, just as it made no mention of the crushing rejections that 9 out of the 10 had survived, or the harsh judgments that help make “Idol” so popular.
Surely it wasn’t a coincidence that the show resembled the climactic prom scene from a teenage movie. For one night old gaffes and slights were forgotten, and everyone could feel like a winner.
The singers smiled and hugged and smiled some more. Maybe they realized that this never ending tour would be over before they were ready. When they walk offstage in Manchester, it will be time to face the music industry, a ruthless world where losers really do lose.

  33. 33 Melissa Aug 27th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

Athough I like that they said that B. is the star of the show I disagree with the rest.

  34. 34 Mary Aug 28th, 2007 at 12:27 am

I went to see the show on Sat. Aug.25….I had close seats…I thought the show was very entertaining …all the singers were great..
I liked the skits they put on along with their singing….Chris played the drums in the boyband set….awesome…and Blake????what can I say……I screamed when he came on….my boyfriend (he is 49) just gave me a weird look….I am 56…..so I think of him as my second son……he even admitted after the show that it was a pretty good show…..wish I could go to the one at the Meadowlands in NJ…but alas”….these tickets broke the bank….
Anyone who can try and go……gogogogogo….you will have a great time
