I’ll admit to being bit skeptical about Blake getting a new single released, based on the lack of radio response to “Break Anotha” and “How Many Words.” (I’m not even going to speculate on why the response has been so lukewarm. I’ll leave that to peeps in comments! ) So, when I heard through the grapevine that Josh Hoge announced at a recent concert that Blake was pushing for “Know My Name” to be the next single, I took it with a huge grain of salt. Then this popped up:
He may have been a runner-up on the sixth season of American Idol, but singer/songwriter and beatboxer, Blake Lewis is still a winner. And with his album (A.D.D.) Audio Day Dream still pushing out singles like “Break Anotha,” “How Many Words” and the upcoming, “Know My Name/Hyper Psyche” (featuring Lupe Fiasco), Lewis, in an exclusive interview with UGO, is out prove to that he can “beat box” any competition.
Is it wishful thinking? Maybe. We’ll have to sit tight and see. I know many peeps thought KMN would have made a better first single than BA. I have to agree.
The video interview does mention some other projects on the horizon for Blake:
- BT- song on his new album
- Collaborating w/ The R**** on a song for the AIDS charity, Dance for Life (I couldn’t make out if he said the Roots. It sounded more like the Rude. But isn’t he doing something with Black Thought? Help!). ETA: It’s Darude.
- Working with KJ Sawka on a trip-hop album
- Hopefully about to begin recording his new album

I know what you mean about having some doubts. However, I think Blake would not talk about next single unless this was discussed and in plans. I think he was careful to give us information even about HMW until it was confirmed. Yes, we will have to wait and see.
As far as collaboration with Roots, maybe it was my wishful thinking, I am not sure now if it was Roots. When I listened to it first time that is what is seemed. When I listened to it the second time, it did sound like Rude (?).
I think he said it was “Darude”. I don’t know how to spell it, but phonetically it sounded like Da-rood.
Also on the next album part he said “Hopefully” he’ll be working on his next album, so I don’t think it sounds like a done deal yet. Hope so though!!!!!
What is trip-hop? (I hope I am not showing how “out of it” I am by asking that. :)
Kasia, if true, I hope the radio stations give it a chance. I’d hate for it to get blacklisted because the previous two singles didn’t do well. It’s so radio-friendly. Maybe Lupe’s reputation will help.

I completely understand your reservations about this because frankly I have them too. I think we all know now that BA was a bad choice for the first single. I guess to be honest, KMN should have been the 2nd single. I really do hope this info is true too.

I’m actually finding it interesting that anyone is surprised about the idea of a 3rd single. The label spent next to nothing on promoting the first two singles or the album (per the DJ’s). So, if they plan the same ill-advised approach with KMN, it will cost them very little in the grand scheme of things.
Of course, I hope that they do plan to do an all-out blitz on this one. But, since it was said (I think by Dallas) that TPTB thought the album would sell itself, they may think that Lupe alone will get this one airplay. I sure hope they don’t take any chance, and I hope B’s publicist will do the work, if the label doesn’t. Though, what he needs is that legal payola from the label to the stations, and the big push from the label.
EOTW and Kasia - yes, his ATB is truly awesome to me too. An MP3 would be great. I remember a LONG time ago, Kristi sent out a link for a website that would convert files to mp3. They had to be submitted in a certain format. I know I converted a few of Blake’s songs to MP3 then. I think that link is on my desktop, and I rarely use it anymore. You might want to see if BLMM has already converted it. I’ll have to check for myself too!

I think KMN would do really well on the radio, especially the fact that Lupe is featured should help boost it. I really hope the radio stations give it a chance, Blake really deserves this. I still don’t understand why HMW never really got any airplay, but I’m hoping KMN will do better, it’s an awesome song. Also, I think some of the slower songs, end of the world, I got u, 1000 miles, and without you, would do really well on the radio as well.

What’s interesting is that it seemed so “pushed” in the recent Blake interviews,the whole OMG!LupeFiasco! angle. It’s a definite selling point methinks, and one that may garner some self-satisfying interests by market.
I truthfully like the plain KMN version sans Lupe we weren’t supposed to hear, but I’m for anything that will help the Boy.

Anyway, the album is a great one, and offers alot to enjoy. If people would discover it, I think it would appreciated. Every time they get a song used on TV or a promo or in a workout/dance recital somewhere– it’s a jingling nickel in a tin cup.
Okay, before I freak– WHEN is the Red Wht and Boom thing? We have something showing on schedule for Blake the 21st and 22nd, but it’s in MO. Our SummerJam thing in TN is going to be the 19th, and Jordin is scheduled to be there.

the fact that the record label thought Blake’s album would “sell itself” says it all. :/ I didn’t see Jive sitting on their ass when they wanted Jordin’s songs to do well, and you’d think SHE would be the one who’d sell by herself since she won Idol. They obviously pushed the hell out of both “Tattoo” and “No Air”(which I still hear a nauseating number of times on my local stations, and I’m always changing the channel). Even with Chris Brown as a collaborator on NA, it’s still obvious the label did what they could to promote that song and get stations to play it. So, if Arista honestly thinks Lupe Fiasco’s name alone will sell KMN, they are sadly mistaken.
Yes, I believe Lupe’s name can only help but KMN won’t do too much if Arista ignores it. Call me cynical. :P
I was one of those who wanted KMN as the second single, for what it’s worth. I was afraid HMW might be a little less mainstream.

IB’s YouTube page has the vids up from KFest. Part 1 starts with KMN, and altho it’s regrettably hard to hear him fully, it sounds like it was really great. I think the way he’s able to perform this live may be something people respond to. :-)
I’m far from being any kind of electronic music buff, but I can see how Blake would really find this sort of collaboration enticing, and a natural thing. His leanings towards this kind of music, and his friendship with BT make it seem like this may be the next stop musically for him. He could really be embraced by that culture.
I love him singing the pop music stuff, so I just hope there is always more like that for us to enjoy. That, and the more jazzy side I find very cool.
