EDIT: Blake’s #’s - 1-866-436-5702 and 1-866-436-5706. Text votes to 5702 ONLY. VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!
Discuss Blake’s top 4 performances here!
Tonight’s theme is the music of the Bee Gee’s with Barry Gibb providing mentoring for the remaining contestants. There will be 2 performances from each contestant, and according to this USA Today article, the performances will be 2 minutes each - longer than the normal 1:30. WARNING: This article also contains information on the contestants’ song choices, so if you don’t want to know, don’t click. :)
Tonight’s voting is SUPER important. All indications are that we are back to the normal 2 hour voting window, and if trends follow past seasons, there will be 3 lines per contestant. We’ll get Blake’s phone numbers posted for you ASAP once the show begins it’s east coast broadcast and we know the order of the performers.
Remember that the most efficient way to vote, especially when the competition gets down to the wire like this, is text voting. If you have a Cingular or AT&T phone with a text plan, or have the disposable income to buy a Cingular Go Phone, text your votes as much as possible. My personal voting strategy tonight is to text for at least the first hour, and if the phone lines clear up then, I’ll switch to phone voting at that point. If they haven’t, I’ll keep going with the texts.
If you are unable to text, my suggestion is to utilize the 2nd or 3rd phone line that is provided for Blake. The “rest of America” will likely be using that first line. So don’t forget about those other 2 lines - you’re more likely to get less busy signals that way, and you should be able to get in more votes for Blake!
Don’t forget to re-read our handy dandy voting strategies and tips here, which were provided last week by the Blaker Girls, and used by the Soul Patrol last year.
We can do this! Blake should be in the top 3! Save the Beatboxer. Save the World!
GO BLAKE and GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, it looks like Blake really benefited from Phil/Chris being gone last week. He definitely picked up a lot of their votes. Anyways, he gets a home town visit and three songs next week. I hope he doesn’t sing the National Anthem in falsetto - LOL.
Let’s not dwell on last night and focus on getting him to the final 2 so he can win a new car.
Sarah- Ugh… You stayed up, too, eh?
The only demographics that exist in Blake’s fanbase is that we don’t fall into *any* specific group! There’s something there to appeal to everyone.
Tara- Heck yeah! Let’s get him that car! And then he can take all of his homeskillets at Team Plaid for a ride!
*not dwelling on last night*
Hanna, I wanna go out with you next time I hit Europe. That’s all I’m sayin…
Jenlar, thanks for the pics. You rock!
That comment from Simon pissed me off, too. He has no clue about Blake’s demographics. This comes from a guy who doesn’t know who 311 is! Ahem.
I think I was disappointed mainly because I thought Blake should have sang one song straight without any beatboxing. I’d rather he had done something like Jive Talking instead of the Dancing one. I really didn’t enjoy the beatboxing in it except for 1 little part. The problem is that after so many raves the week before, he went too much into what he liked to do instead of what he should have done. Having said that, I still very much enjoyed the 2nd song and liked his falsetto in the 1st one. I also did some serious voting because a final 3 without Blake would be too dreary for words.
Randy bugged me when he said that about the beatboxing (even though I agreed) because he said the opposite weeks ago.
Randy was a BEOTCH last night. I hate him.
For what I can realize, The Bee Gees songs are stylized and written for a particular range with lots of harmonies. Blake injected more of his oomph, moreso than I expected with the beatboxing on both numbers. He performed his choices with that Euro sound; that British, Swiss, German, etc. club music that I hear quite often when the Euro travellers hit Tribeca/SoHo in NY. With that Blakeness, he is fearless and stands out in this competition.
The Team Plaid’sters are great. Thanks for the welcome, pj.
Now I have to find my way over to the voting thread on this site to see what more can be added.

That makes me want to cry.
Let the judge be judged. In February 2007, after Blake sang “Somewhere Only We Know”, Randy said, “but I do miss the beatboxing, I think you should always keep that a part of your thing.” Consistency, please.

Aww bean that makes me so sad.
We love you Blake, and I voted my little fingers off for you! Don’t be sad and dejected.
The one good thing about that People article is that the exec producer of “Lost” loves Blake! WOO HOO! :)
ETA: Good one Kate. I knew he said that somewhere, but I couldn’t remember where. Thanks for posting that.
Awww, Bean.
Blake, don’t be sad. Team Plaid has your back!
Me too….
But I honestly think what Blake needs to do is regroup and focus for next week. He has to acknowledge that the whole beatbox techno dance can only be done so much on the show.
By thew way, thanks for the Somewhere Only We Know moment, I have to admit it. SOWK will always be One of my FAVORITE Blake performances.
I thought his vocals were spot on and he delivered it so well and smoothly.
I actually think Blake needs a Somewhere Only We Know moment next week. Something WOW but without beatboxing… JMHO.
I really hope CLive is on his side and picks a cool song for him. I don’t want any “Open Arms” for him please.
I am praying Clive convinces Adam Levine to give Blake one of his older hits. This Love for example.
Poor Blake. :( I wish I could give him a hug. I thought he did great on the 2nd song. All 4 of them had one song that wasn’t so good. Some of them had two. He has no reason to hang his head. We still love you Blake, and think you’re great. The inconsistency of the judges gets me every year. It’s so annoying. Thanks for the quote, Kate.
I know Blake’s gonna do great next week. I voted my fingers off to help him get there. Team Plaid all the way to the top!
Yes Blake, we have your back. If DI is correct, it looks like us Blakers pull through for our guy last night. I still don’t understand why Melinda is near the bottom. I think Randy’s “resident pro” comment is hurting her, or people are getting bored with her performances, or they assume she’s safe.
We discussed the whole Maroon 5/Clive thing in chat at MJ’s last night.
They are with Universal Music Group, therefore not signed with Clive, therefore I truly doubt Adam and the other guys would even think about letting their songs be sung on the show, especially if they’ve been stingy with them in the past.
So we probably better not set our sights on Blake singing Maroon 5 next week.
What I’m more concerned about is which judge will get to choose a song for him and what they will pick, since they are unfamiliar with most of the more current artists that Blake resembles in style.
Thanks Sarah.. I did not know that. I thought they were signed with Clive.
Oh well, let’s just hope for something cool for Blake from old Clive.
I was under the impression that they were too, maracaibo. It would make sense, as Sony/BMG is a HUGE entity and has so many labels under their umbrella. But apparently not.
I’m actually okay with Blake NOT singing M5 on the show, as their big hits were really overplayed on the radio and it’s tough to take a song people know so well and make it fresh and new… especially if it’s only a few years old.
I thought Clive did a good job picking for Taylor (Dancing in the Dark) last year and Carrie (Crying - Roy Orbison) the year before, and Diana (Don’t Cry Out Loud - Melissa Manchester) the year before that… so there’s hope that he can pick something suited to the style of the singer that they will be able to sing well.
I hope that Blake (or Clive/judge) will pick a Jason Mraz song for himself next week. Again, I’ve been dying to hear Blake take on Mraz since the first time I heard “She Loves The Way.” And plus we know Jason isn’t totally against his songs being on the show since Chris R sang “Geek In The Pink” in the semis. AND Blake is Mraz fan too - he lists him as one of his faves in his Q & A on americanidol.com. *crosses fingers for “Wordplay” or “The Remedy”*
Sigh. I just hope he’s there next week. DialIdol can’t be THAT inaccurate, can it?
Mraz would be GREAT for him star.. Great choice.
I think his songs fit Blake very very well. Blake’s original song “Dumpty Humpty” reminds of a combo between Jason Mraz and Maroon 5.
I hope this will happen.
In any case let’s just get through tonight. I really think Blake will be safe.
The only good thing about having a very bad week, it’s that Blake will be pumped to make a comeback the next.
I sure hope he is still motivated.. He has to. If he is going to end his run on AI it better be with a bang not in a mediocre way.
Blake just refocus… You hear me?
Zabasearch has him as the highest placer on it’s latest sampling as well. And they say Lakisha is going home. I’ll get the link in a sec and bring it back.
Mraz would be a great pick for Blake. I doubt Clive or any judge besides maybe Randy would pick it for him though, so maybe it will be his choice? Or Randy will get to pick it for him?
I only believe DialIdol when it benefits Blake. I guess after last night, I want to believe the best possible scenario.
The only problem I have with Lakisha leaving instead of Melinda is that probably all of her votes will go to Melinda. JMHO. Maybe I am wrong.
If they put Lakisha and Melinda as the bottom two tonight then people will rev up for Melinda next week and she will end up in the finale with Jordin.
As much as I respect Melinda I prefer Lakisha staying just to have higher hopes tha Blake will be in the finale.
I think Melinda will get many many votes next week if people see her tonight is in the bottom two. What do you guys think?
Well, no matter whether it is Lakisha or Melinda leaving this week, their votes will most likely go to the other one. They are the two left who are most similar in style and probably share the most voters.
I’d rather Melinda stay. She’s been one of my favorites from the beginning, and IMO, she is the one left who has been the most consistent and most deserves to win. I’d rather have a finale with her and Blake than Blake/Jordin.
Jordin is not a lock for the finale. No one is. Especially if you end up with a Blake/Jordin/Melinda final 3, which is what I’ve been wanting and predicting all along.
ETA: I’d rather have the three most deserving in the final 3 than one who might be touted being “easy to beat”. Let them fight it out for themselves.
If TPTB places the following people in the bottom two, here’s who will go home:
Lekisha/Blake: Lekisha will go home
Lekisha/Melinda: Melinda will go home
Blake/Melinda: Melinda will go home
Basically, I think that if you see Melinda in the bottom two, she’s a sure bet to go home. I don’t think TPTB will put her in the bottom two only to announce that she’s safe. Even though she’s an amazing singer, I don’t think they want her in the finales because I don’t think they want her to win.
Damn!
What was that last night? Everybody can have an off night but seriously, how could everybody be so off?
I had high hopes for the theme, but then I realized after listening to a number of Bee Gees songs how reliant they are on falsetto annd 3 or 4 part harmony. Not great solo songs, most of them.
Anyway, I predicted Blke to be the only one safe this week, and even after those performances, it appears DI is confirming that. We’ll see, but I do know the plaidster is not going home this week (well he is, but just for a visit).
Go BLAKE! Go TEAM PLAID!
I’d prefer Melinda to stay too. Honestly, I think that Blake has a better advantage if it’s Blake/ Jordin finale. A lot of Melinda and Lakisha fans are not necessarily Jordin fans. I think there would be a bit of backlash that would help him. On the other hand, even though I will vote for Blake to the end, I wouldn’t be sad if Melinda won. She is pretty amazing.
Maroon 5’s first release was on BMG, so actually Clive does own the “Songs About Jane” songs. They changed labels for the new album. Unless the entire Octone catalog shifted with the imprint. I doubt it though. Clive should still have enough of a piece to use one of the songs. So….Maroon 5 is back on the table…possibly.
Interesting Erinn! So there IS a connection after all. I still wonder if Adam and the boys would give clearance for them though…
Sarah, Adam may not have much of a choice. The way recording contracts are written these days, artists are forced to give away a lot rights. Given that this was their first major label album, and that they left BMG as soon as they could, my guess is that they sold a piece of their soul.
I’m sure it is prefered that the band give their blessing, but I’m not sure it is neccessary.
True, Erinn. There are a lot of rights that they likely had to give up.
I just don’t want him to sing Maroon 5. There, I said it. lol. They’re one of my favorite bands, and I just don’t like anyone attempting to cover them. The songs are not easy to sing, and plus they were way overplayed as I said earlier. A LOT of people are familiar with their hits… It would be a big risk, and I’m not sure it would pay off.
Even after the YSBD debacle, I think we can still trust him. I completely understand where you are coming from. Songs for Jane is an incredible album. I just think that since Blake has covered them before he is obviously a fan, and whatever he does will be with utmost respect. Looks at all the JBJ fans who did like YGLABN. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Maybe you are right Sarah.
Maybe Maroon 5 is not a good idea after all. Adam’s voice is so distinctive that people would compare.
I am now inclined for Blake to pick a Jason Mraz for himself. I think it could go very very well, as I sais some of his PRE AI songs are very Jason Mrazque.
I am just praying that Pauler is not the judge picking it out the song for him. She sucks picking songs, sorry.
I would actually prefer Simon make the pick for hi.
I think Simon sees potential in Blake and a good song from him could mean another WOW moment for Blake.
JMHO
Yeah Erinn, I definitely agree that he would be respectful of the song itself since he is a fan.
It just worries me because their music is so recent and got so much airplay that he will inevitably be compared to the original, I fear moreso than if he was singing a 20 or 30 year old song.
His reworking of YGLABN worked, IMO, because it’s a 20 year old song that he dusted off and made new. Even though it was a popular song in its’ day, it’s not a classic that shouldn’t be touched. If you try to rework a recent song that still pretty fresh in the minds of viewers and fans, you’re really taking a big risk.
To me, it’s a rare occasion when a contestant can do real justice to a very well known song that is less than 5 years old. Most pale in comparison to the originals, or are just an okay imitation of the original.
Of course, I usually stress for nothing, so just ignore me. LOL.
I don’t think Simon will pick for Blake. He’ll pick for one of the girls.
Paula doesn’t do too bad with picking songs, I don’t think. She picked great songs for both Bo and Elliott (can’t remember who she picked for during season 3), and I believe she picked “Mack the Knife” for Clay, which was awesome.
Randy does pretty well with picking songs too… and he HAS picked the judges’ choice songs for the last two winners, so maybe it would be good for him to pick Blake’s!
I think in general, the judges are spot on in the songs they pick for the contestants. It’s Clive who throws them under the bus with his choices. Hello, Bo singing Elton John, Elliott singing Journey, and Katharine singing R Kelly? WTF?
I though Paula missed the mark with Bo. Satisfaction did nothing to show off his strengths, IMO. I loved Bo and am sad she didn’t do better with the song selection. I almost felt like she picked it because she knows nothing of rock music.
As for Maroon 5, I wish they had cleared it for Ace last year when he ended up doing the dreadful Drops of Jupiter. He was awesome on tour with Harder to Breathe.
PJ, interesting. I thought the Stones was a great pick for him. Sure, he could have done other stuff too, but I thought it offset his other songs well, and also some of the stuff he’d done earlier in the season.
I think Paula is pretty hit or miss with the song choices. From what I understand, she was originally going to pick Taylor’s song last year, but he had already chosen her song to do as his choice that night (Try a Little Tenderness). I loved her choice for Elliot. Bo I was meh on. Her choice for Jasmine was meh too.
Truth is, they are all hit or miss. It depends upon how well they really know the contestant. I wish I knew what that meant for Blake. It’s been a while since the 311 comments.
I think Clive likes Blake. He definitely sees dollar signs when Blake is on stage. No worries there. I’m not too sure Clive liked Taylor, but Dancing in the Dark was a decent choice.
I agree. I also think Clive likes Blake and after the You Give Love A Bad Name performance even more.. So..Blake got a lot of hype from MTV and many mainstream media.. which is awesome!
Let’s just hope him and his people make the appopriate song choice for Blake.
I know many Taylor fans did not like Dancing in the Dark, but I thought he did AMAZING with that song and it is one of my favorite performances from Taylor. The song fitted his voice perfectly.
So anyways I am praying next week treats well Blake. I mean he can’t go lower than last night. He will be back.
Which Taylor fans didn’t like DITD? Everyone I know loved it. Granted, they loved all the performances that night, and TALT especially. I think I’m the only SPer who didn’t like YASB, but to each his own.
