Dear Mr. (or Ms.) DJ…

With the excitement of the radio release of Blake’s first single, “Break Anotha,” we thought it would be helpful to put together some helpful hints for contacting radio stations. We hope these basic guidelines will help us promote the song without pissing off DJ’s and Program Directors.

Do’s:

  • Always be polite.  If a DJ says they don’t have the song, thank them and end the call.
  • If you email, provide a link to the song streaming online.  I suggest the AOL link.
  • Mention Ryan Tedder of One Republic’s involvement with the song. You might even want to reference their hit with Timbaland, “Apologize.” This lends some credibility to Blake as well as cross-promotes One Republic.
  • Make sure the song fits in with the station’s format.  To find your local stations, here’s a handy station locator.
  • If you listen to the station and like the programming, say so.  Personalize all communications by mentioning the DJ’s name and/or something you may have heard on their show. This lets them know you are a real listener! However, don’t do this if you really don’t listen to the station.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t call outside your local area. Nothing pisses DJ’s off more than to think that they are being ambushed by organized fans.
  • Don’t call or email the same station more than once a day.  Don’t email the same DJ more than once a week.
  • Don’t be confrontational if the DJ’s say no.
  • Don’t mention you are a big Blake fan.  Put the emphasis on how much you like the song.  If they think you are streat teaming, they will take your request less seriously.  Use your real name and don’t send a request from an email address like pjLuvsBlake@yahoo.com. That might tip them off.  Heh.

If you can think of any other helpful tips, let us know.  We will eventually add the radio request strategy as a tab at the top. Thanks!

    I said:

Blake is in the video so all us blake supporters run over and watch it a million times to see blake. Then we watch it so much we start liking the song and buy Jordin’s CD.

ITA!! and what’s more? It’s working! :-) I forget how many times I watched that video yesterday, honestly.

OMG. Bully, me too! I wasn’t even the least bit interested in Jordin’s music or her music video, but I just keep watching for Blake. Now I am starting to sing along. Dammit!

:help_tb: What has this boy done to me!?!

Anyway, I have been following the Mediabase info and it seems so confusing to me. I am starting to get it, so thanks for the explanations guys. I am happy to see Blake at 95 already, but I hope he goes up slowly. Sometimes when people go up fast they go down even faster. I am planning to email radio stations closer to the album debut. I like the slow and steady path. It worked for Daughtry and some think they got big too fast. Only time will tell.

LMAO! (I like the “Help!” emoticon too!)
Yeah yeah Karen, we start singing along with Jordin, because we have to back up the player 50 times to see Blake’s three segments…yup. I’ve done it myself.
    *grins*

Girls, you know what’s funny. When I first saw Jordin’s official site through the Zomba label group site, of course you go to that page and it says jordinsparks.com coming soon and it has Tattoo playing on the page. I must admit that I occasionally would hit the play but a few times to hear it again. If you listen to the song long enough, you realize it’s kind of catchy. You know it’s all Blake’s fault that we that we fast forward to see him in the vid! I need the help emoticon too! hee!

    Karen,

I suspect that is the route Clive and Arista are hoping to take with “Break Anotha” - let the single gradually gain airplay and interest, just in time for when Blake’s CD drops in early December. Daughtry’s music video for “It’s Not Over” didn’t even debut until late January, and the song itself was released last December.

The goal really is to have steady, consistent sales over time, NOT tons of sales at once and then nothing. Look at Taylor Hicks vs. Daughtry - Daughtry’s CD is still selling 20,000 or more a week while Taylor’s only selling 150-200 a week at the moment.
