Love the discussion yesterday about the next single. I think it was Anne who made a statement here sometime ago about IGU and about how the kids would eat that one up. The more I hear that song, the more I become addicted to it. I love Blake’s voice in the song and I think it could be a good radio fit sometime down the road, maybe not as a 2nd single, but as a 3rd. I wouldn’t be disappointed if KMN were single #2, but HMW I think would be a better choice as far as a 2nd single choice and plus I think it would be a good crossover song to HAC. If nothing else, thing about all those folks who aren’t even fans who like the song. I think that’s saying something. lol
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who loves IGU. :D
Yeah! All my friends who’ve heard it love it! I don’t see why anyone would dislike it anyway. HMW is just such a beautiful song, so perfect. I really hope it is the next single.
The very first time that I listened to all the songs on the internet, the very first one that I just loved was IGU. It was just such a great up beat song with such a great melody and chorus. As I listened to the album more, EOTW became my new favorite, with IGU a really close second. HMW is a favorite also, but I like IGU and EOTW just slightly better. I would be happy with any of those three. Blake’s voice just really stands out on all three of those songs for me. I really wish they would do it soon!!!!! NEED MY BLAKE FIX NOW!!!!!! LOL
what is the usual time frame for a 2nd release? When did McPhee or Hicks release their 2nd?
I think IGU has the one chorus that really sticks in my head day in/day out. Even though it isn’t my favorite song on the album, I find myself singing the chorus at some point almost every day. It’s a “stick-in-ya-head” song. I believe that’s a good sign for a single.
I don’t see him getting a 3rd single if the 2nd doesn’t hit. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like to look ahead too much. I’m optimistic that the 2nd will do better than BA. Even Blake was worried that BA wasn’t it. I just wish they would listen to him when he says what he thinks should be released. If they trust his intuition, they should let him decide. I really think the boy is smart enough and has the great instincts that make him capable of making all the decisions. I’m guessing the people that work with him see that too, based on comments they have made. Too bad the suits don’t trust him totally with it. They are too wound up about the money aspect and giving too much control to an unproven talent. (Though I think impressing the hell out of all the music people he works with proves him well enough in my mind.)
duck
Blake impresses the hell out of me often. :-)
I watched the new LA Ink last night–and I reeeally thought they were going to show him at that Dr Tattoffs. I was like, “That’s where he was! Right there!” but they didn;t show him at all. Nope. The next new one is next Tuesday, so maybe then, eh? Pixie has to go back for like 12 laser processes to remove that big multi-color arm tattoo. Maybe it will fit in with that storyline somehow if they show him.
So, no BShorty last night on LA Ink. Spouse thought I had lost my mind, watching that. The kids were fascinated too, no doubt.
Oh, and IGU is my ringtone–and it’s Wonderful.:-)
I would love for IGU to be the next single. When I first lisetened to the album, I absolutely feel in love with that song too!!!
IGU is in my Top 5 favorites. It could have a shot as a single at some point, but I would prefer it not be the 2nd single. I’m still hoping for HMW.
Actually, that station played YGLABN and I think they did the first time that one popped up on the 11th. It does seem like the college stations are very receptive to BA though. :)
I guess I’ll be in the tiny minority that isn’t really big on “I Got U”! Sorry, it just sounds a little *too* boybandish pop for my tastes. :/ But, for all I know it’d be a huge hit. LOL.
I mostly suggested KMN as the next single since I think it’d have alot of appeal in Top 40 markets, but also BIG markets (if they ever bothered to play it). Cities like NY, L.A., and Chicago might be more receptive, especially with the Lupe collab. KMN also has a catchy chorus.
*waves* at Pam. I do think the young kids would eat this song up, much like Tattoo. And while it does have the pop boy band sound to it, there isn’t any boy bands on the radio right now…other than the Jonas Brothers. I have been listening to the song a lot this morning, and the lyrics really are pretty. Perfect for a Feburary time release. Could also see a sweet video coming from this, if done right. There is no beatboxing, the chorus is very catchy, and it has a nice beat to it. Could work:)
Like newduck said they need this second single to be a hit if anything else is going to come from this album. Play it safe and straight up. IGU is just that:)
Yes Pam - I saw that and went back and deleted my entry on this. But it looks like you must have been typing this up at the same time I was deleting it. :o)
oops lol :)
Here are the latest sales #’s from Ken Barnes at Idol Chatter.
I’ve been trying to post the sales #’s but my post keeps disappearing.
Ken Barnes has the scan numbers up. Only 4000 for Blake. Yikes! Maybe Blake should put out a country album …. (just kidding!)
ummm…no lol What he needs is a new single and the sooner the better IMO.
Pam I agree. He fell from 118-161. He needs a new single now and hopefully a performance on Idol soon.
Anyone got a text from Blake’s SayNow? I tried calling back thinking there was a message or something I was posed to hear, but it said his message box was full..
The single should be (but wont be) Surrender..
Either way, Surrender will be the 2nd single in my head.
“Know My Name” should have been the first single and could be a hit as a second single. “Whatcha Got 2 Lose” would also be a good choice for a single. Those two would help establish him as a radio presence and pave the way to release more “adventurous” singles after he’s already had some radio success.
When I first heard the album, the ones that stood out to me immediately as mainstream top 40 singles (other than the first single, which we already knew about) were “Know My Name”, “Whatcha Got 2 Lose”, “How Many Words”, “Gots to Get Her”, “End of the World”, and “I Got U”.
I think BA could still have a chance on radio… It just shouldn’t have been the first single. They could pull a Pink with “Who Knew” and release it again after he’s already had a hit or two at radio. ;) But anyway let’s just put it this way, if Clive had wanted to sink Blake from the get go, “Without You” would have been the first single.
“Know My Name” has been my favorite from the first time I heard it.
Same here. ;)
I actually don’t think “Whatcha Got 2 Lose” would be a good single. I do like it, but I don’t know…it seems a little too left of center, just like “Break Anotha.” I’m not sure it would catch on at radio either. The only thing that might help it is the fact that JR Rotem is attached to it.
I think KMN or HMW should be released next and soon.
Star, I agree about WG2L. It’s a great song, but I don’t think it would be the best choice either.
Star, I get your point, about it being to left of center, but people know Blake as the beatboxer from AI. Sadly its a one-way stereotype, but thats what got Blake his name right? WG2L, not only has beatboxing, but also enough funk and soul into it, that people can sing along too, BA wasn’t sing able, you could rock out to it, but its not singable, so the public i think turned away to it. Also, i think that Blake preforming that live, would have been incredible (anything he preforms live would be). Blake is used to improving, and using Loop pedals and a Kaoss pad, and that lets him experiment with the song a lot, especially the beatboxing break down in the middle of the song, unike BA where there wasnt a lot of room for changing it up.
I agree with this. He needs some much needed buzz, ASAP.
Wow! Seems that a lot of us are on the same page about WYGTL. I have to agree with star’s assesment because that’s kind of the way I see the song. I like it as well, but I don’t see it getting a good reception at radio either. It is kind “out there” so to speak like BA but I would even say more so than BA in some ways.
Sarah,
Good point about Without You. I never looked at it that way, but I see what you mean. I do love the song though. :)
OT, but here is a cute picture of CRich, Melinda, and Steph Jones performing at Jordin’s Super Bowl bash.
This was posted over at IDF, along with a recap of what CRich sang…if you are interested.

See, I totally disagree about WG2L not being radio-ready. It’s danceable and easy to sing along to. It has enough of a hiphop flair but not too much, so it’s pretty palatable for pretty much anyone. But maybe that’s just me.
And yeah, the JR Rotem connection would definitely help.
I agree, Its a great track. and I think it could be and probably should have been the first single. But I cant talk coulda or shoulda, I can only talk in the present tense. All my Blake hating friends, and even the Subway lady finds WG2L, amazing, they all sing parts of it, most of them are ashamed to admit they like it. I think it would be a great single. Anyways, I its not in our hands, let Blake, and the rest of the peoples do their job. All we can do is anticipate the best!
Anne, that pic is really sweet. :)
Blake only sold 4,000 this week. Man that’s not right.
I really can’t believe sales are that low so early.
We need the second single ASAP! I feel so sad for Blake he deserves so much to be successful, this is a great record it can’t be a flop.
I agree that BA was not the best choice for first single, damn it!
KMN would have been much better. He needs a song that has mass appeal.
IMO good songs for that are H2LH, HMH or IGU.
I hope the label keeps pushing him and don’t throw the towel yet. He is going to need all the support he can get now, and hopefully an AI performance to boost those sales and get some buzz.
Butet the funny thing is it wasn’t even close to being in my top five when the album first came out, but after I saw them perform it live at the JBB I really liked it. I started listening to more after that, and now it is right up there. Though like you said it is sooo out of our hands. Again, just waiting for some noise about if/when the next single will be released.
Pam I thought it was a sweet picture too. I guess Lakisha and Sanjayia were there too.
Butet- I got a text this afternoon. I immediately (duh! fangirl here!!!) called back and got a woman’s voice asking me to leave a message. I hung up because I thought that I dialed wrong. I checked the number and called back about a minute or so later and the box was full. Here’s what the text said:
From: 729-669
blakelewis: Hey it’s Blake, just checkin in, hit me up at 206-937-3082 & leave me some love-saynow.com
Really Anne? I remember Blake and Chris were really stoked fro this song, even way before ADD came out. Just by the way they were describing it got me pumped up for it, and when I first heard the song in full, I fell in love with it. For the past few days its been on repeat constantly, I am tring to get the beatboxing down, I find myself looking like a down right fool, but its still fun to try. :(…
I also, think back to an interview where Blake said that the first time he heard BA, he had some reservations about it. I just find interesting to see that an artists first gut instinct or intuition about something is correct.
LOL! Jenlar
, me too!! I got the text during my Political Science class, I started to get really antsy, but right when that class was over, I hit those numbers like my life counted on it. *shame face here* Stupid inbox was full by the time i called in! I was thinking, oh hell he just announced his next single, but then I heard the annoying SayNow lady telling me his inbox was full! How rude, not letting a dedicated fan leave a message! :D
When I received the text, I was thinking it was going to be saying what the next single was. So I called the number and it just said the box was full. Darn it all.
Butet I don’t know why but it just…something didn’t grab me right away. My favorite 5 in the beginning were; KMN, HMW, HMH, SMMLI, EOTW and Surrender. Now I’m really enjoying IGU and I like WG2L. Not too mention all the others I just listed:)
My favorite tracks are
HMW
WYG2L
KNM
EOTW
Human
Surrender
I’ve also grown fond of BA
Butet,
Here is the funny thing about SayNow. A bunch of folks called and got that “mailbox was full” message from what I understand. There was an error in the phone # that was texted. If you look at his MS page and see the Saynox box, this is the phone # that is shown there:
(206) 973-3082
What you guys got was
(206) 937-3082
When I heard about that this afternoon, I called the correct # and the message I heard was from 3 months ago when BA was released so I think that’s the right #. LOL
PAM are you serious? So not only did they charge me 15 cents for a stinking text message, but also like long distance calls that went nowhere? I didn’t even get to leave a fabulous fan freak message!! Oh its on baby its on!
Hee! Well, I’ll tell you this much, I saw a comment on his page earlier tonight where a fan asked if that # on the saynow box on his page was the right # and I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be the correct one. I think someone made a mistake. LOL
Have fun with your message! :P
I think most here will enjoy this…KT Tunstall using loop pedals to cover “Walk Like An Egyptian”!
I thought it was awesome! :D
I would be flippin’ out, if I got text like that, Jenlar!:-) No clue how to respond to something like that, either. yikes.
Comment on the #’s sold–I thought we hit 260K last week? Maybe I’m hallucinating… taxes, papers, you know!
Interesting talk about WYGTL. I enjoyed reading people’s opinions. And yeah, when KMN was leaked, i really really thought that should have been the first single. But now? I just think I like the others better for catchy ear-worm quality. I want to infect the masses. heh.
Looking forward to seeing the KT vid, as I was fascinated to see her Cherry Tree version with the looping pedals. It was awesome, IMO. I wish she hadn;t made the comment she did, about not liking pop reality tv stars. I had a breif fantasy of her and B amazing us with a live compilation. *sigh*
Loved it, Star! Interesting pic of KT w/ Susanna Hoffs in the background. They kinda look alike there.
However, logistically it seems like it would’ve been easier for one of the background singers to do the tamborine part.
I feel sorry for the poor girl who’s voicemail box got filled with messages from Blake fans, lol.
Tell me about it! Can you imagine what her reaction must have been when she got all those messages especially all the fangirly ones. lol I wouldn’t be in her shoes right now for anything.
Star - thanks so much for the KT vid - I’ve always loved that song.
Star enjoyed that video of KT-thanks for posting.
