New Music: Robin Thicke

Since we were reminiscing about “When I Get You Alone” earlier in the week…check out Robin Thicke’s new single, “Magic”! The track will be on Robin’s new album, out 7/1/08. What do you think?

Maroon 5 & Rihanna

DISCLAIMER: This is meant to be fun.

So what exactly do you have to do to get radio airplay these days? Hooking up with radio’s latest hot commodity seems to be Maroon 5’s strategy of choice for their new single, “If I Never See Your Face Again.” Rihanna recently went into the studio to add some guest vocals to the already sizzling (IMO) track from It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Click the video below to give the new version a listen. What do you think? Will it a be a huge summertime hit? Did you like it better before, without Rihanna?

If you like the song, you can buy it on iTunes TOMORROW! (And hey, if you want to help support our blog, click the little iTunes banner to the right before purchasing!)

Which female radio darling would you like to hear Blake do a song with? Take our poll after the jump!

Ryan Tedder & OneRepublic

We thought it was time to dedicate a post to a man who’s spent a lot of time with Blake in the recording studio over the last several months…Ryan Tedder! Dreaming Out Loud, the debut album from Ryan’s band OneRepublic, is in stores today! This record has been a long time coming for 1R. It all started when Ryan participated in a talent search contest Lance Bass (seriously!!!) conducted on MTV’s TRL in 2000…Ryan ended up winning the viewer voted-on competition, but more importantly managed to catch the attention of uberproducer Timbaland in the process. “He sounded like John Mayer, but better,” Timbaland recently told Rolling Stone magazine. Check out Ryan’s breakthrough performance here!

Blake at the LG Action Sports Championship

Post-show report: We got another e-mail from Aunt Marcia. She just wanted us to mention a couple of things…1) Blake DID perform the actual “Putting On The Ritz,” not a song that samples POTR. It was a very Blakized version featuring scatting, etc. 2) The band sounds as if they’ve been playing together for years and put on a great show! 3) There was one song in the mix that they didn’t catch the title of. 4) Thanks to everyone for supporting Blake!

Edit: Update from Marcia - All the signs point to Blake being last. There are three events prior to the music. They are starting inline skating now. The stage is all set up but no sign of Blake. The arena is fairly small probably only using 8 thousand seats but not nearly that many people here. More later.

Edit 2: They were out there setting up about 30 minutes ago… and now he’s watching and getting the crowd pumped up!! As of 4:19 EST, Marcia anticipates Blake’s starting in about 30 minutes… so around 4:45 EST.

Edit 3: Blake’s outfit update! Hair spiked high, Dark hoodie, Bright t shirt, No plaid pants (I think if so very subtle) Also, they just asked for the Blake fans to yell. There are quite a few.

Edit 4: First song is “Break Anotha”! YAY!! From Marcia about “Break Anotha”: Not too much longer than recorded but sounded great. Now a version of putting on the ritz with blake spin.

Edit 5: He’s introducing the band members by beatboxing with each one. I LOVE IT!

Edit 6: He did a really long beatbox with kevin and then looped “She Loves the Way” after he thanked AI fans… There weren’t many words on SLTW. Marcia says - His voice is definitely in great form, he hit the highest note I ever heard him hit and he’s now doing “Whatcha Got to Lose”.

Edit 7: Marcia says that she forgot to tell us that he was wearing a bandanna around his neck. Way to give props to Texans, Blake! :) She also said that he mentioned going on tour but didn’t elaborate much. And he just did “Know My Name”. YAY!!!!

Edit 8: Apparently, “Know My Name” was the last song. Marcia just emailed saying that the set is over. Sounds like a great show! As always, if you were there, please feel free to post a recap here!! Also, if you have video, please please please share!! :)

So, while my Manchester recap has been slow in coming (sorry about that! you know the good stuff already anyway :)), something cool happened there that will be very important to us today as we wait for recaps and info about Blake’s performance at the LG Action Sports gig.

UPDATE: Play “Break Anotha” here!

***

Wow, the news is coming at us fast and furious today! Ken Barnes of USA Today’s Idol Chatter was one of apparently many recipients of a press release from 19 Entertainment, announcing Blake’s debut single…

Season 6 runner-up Blake Lewis emerges from the cocoon of silence that has mostly enveloped him (tour aside) since the end of the show. 19 Entertainment has announced a Dec. 4 release date for his still-untitled album, and a leadoff single, Break Anotha, goes out to radio Tuesday.

The thoughtful folks at 19 also included a link for lucky recipients of the press release to hear the single, which I did. It sounds like a clever maximizing of Blake’s musical inclinations in a contemporary pop context. Or, in plainer English, it’s a heavily produced pop-soul tune featuring a chanted chorus with a striking strings figure and a bit of beatboxing and other vocal gymnastics. Seems to be aimed straight at the Justin Timberlake market, and — with a properly warm radio reception — it could hit the jackpot.

Sounds like Ken thinks there’s some hit potential here! And it’s great that they’re getting it to radio so quickly. Stations will be adding Christmas music to their playlists soon, so it makes it a little more difficult for a new song to build momentum during the holiday season. Way to go, Team Blake! I can’t wait to hear this tomorrow!

ASCAP shows that this tune was penned by Ryan Tedder and Sam Watters.

Did you check out that hot new track playing in the background? Could it be his first single? Discuss!

Josh Hoge is my new BFF!

Okay, not really, but I did get some scoopage from him at the Elliott Yamin concert at the Orlando House of Blues tonight. For those who don’t know… Josh is currently touring with Elliott Yamin. He is one of two opening acts, and he’s very available to the fans afterward, so I got a chance to talk with him and ask him about the song(s) we’d heard that he’d written that Blake had recorded.

So, I heart Josh Hoge, and he deserves major props for talking to me about Blake at the concert. He totally didn’t have to, so that was really nice, I thought. So, in return, check out his myspace and add him as a friend. I did!

Between The Last Goodnight’s set and Elliott’s set, my roommate and I decided to get our last drink for the night. Well, we get to the bar, and there’s Josh Hoge standing right there. Nice! No work at all on our parts. So, we approach him, and I ask him as we’re taking a pic if I can ask him a question and he says sure. So… I lead in with “so I’ve heard that you’ve written some songs that Blake Lewis has recorded…” And off he goes… The gist of what he said, after the break!

Single News?

Well, it seems we finally have some single news to report! Check out this little blurb on Pure Tone Music’s main page:

Next Tuesday, 10/30/07, will be a big day for Blake Lewis fans. More details to follow, but make sure that you visit blakelewiscomingsoon.com and call the number listed to sign up, if you haven’t already! You just may hear Blake’s first single very, very soon…

If you recall, Pure Tone Music is the A&R firm that reps Blake. And this bit of news falls right into line with what Blake told MJ and me at the last concert in Manchester - though he told us October 31st, but close enough. :)

This doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily gonna hear the single on the radio immediately. Jordin’s was released a few weeks before it actually went for adds. But, the song will be out there, and surely will give us an advance taste of what the album is going to be like.

So, sign up at Blake’s official site if you haven’t already, so you can hear the single!

2080s

We’ve heard Blake describe his sound as 2080s in various interviews and articles throughout the summer. Fan reactions to his description often range from “Wow, that sounds soooo cool!” to “Um, WTF?!!” This post is dedicated to all the WTF?!!ers out there. :wink1_tb: Team Plaid gives you the 2080s.

Exhibit A: Kanye West’s “Stronger” Listen closely…I don’t know about you, but in addition to the electronic Daft Punk sample, I hear shades of Depeche Mode.

More 2080s after the jump!
