Thanks Pam. Funny that you’re the 98th poster on the thread with the 98,000 figure. I don’t get B’s bulletins (don’t want a myspace) so thanks for posting.

Also, I was going to say he seemed like he forgot his lyrics to EW, nice humming to cover it up! The lyrics are a little more complex than the other songs on ADD.

Go Jordin on “Tattoo”’s 500k+ downloads but wow, I can’t imagine listening to that song a lot because of that weird yelping in the background.

NBNN, I think Blake stomps omn his loop pedals/Kaoss pad gor the echo effect. I’d imagine the horns and other tracks are piped in separately. Good to know you heard them too.

    Kilroy,

haha! That is kind of funny. Your welcome.

I sent a bunch of copies of A.D.D. out to unsuspecting friends and family members, and i’m getting positive responses all around. i’m also hearing a lot of “wow, i didn’t expect to like this, but i really do.” which proves my theory that people just need to hear the record, to dispel any preconceptions they may have. so lend it to your friends! or at least play it for them. :)

    Lara,

this is also exactly WHY Blake needs better radio airplay. If people hear his song on the radio and decide they like it, they may be more inclined to buy the CD or download the track off iTunes. If they don’t hear it (or catch him on TV), they may not even know he has an album out.

As for label support, I think at least for now, not so much for the radio. There is no guarantee that z100 will heavily rotate Break Anotha after its premier. On the other hand, Clive did spend some money hiring good producers for this album. So I think he is going to push it.

    Grabmic,

Blake did get very good producers, and pretty current ones (not has-beens from decades ago, lol) at that. So, you have to think that the label has some confidence in this CD and Blake himself.

I added Sam Hollander on MS and told him I love the songs he produced on A.D.D., he wrote back and said “Blake’s the best”, haha! His producers seem to be fanboys a bit too, no ;)?

    Re: BA–
    maracaibo said–

I don’t think BA will be the breakthrough song either.

It just seems to chart so slow on Mediabase, Tattoo climbed much faster. BA just doesn’t seem to connect with people IMO.

I have said it before, but it bears repeating, that I think BA was released was to pull in the naysayers and the Male audience, who have felt shut out by all the fangirling. The AI vibe is all “cheesey” too, and BA is certainly not that! LOL. I think by trying to appeal to a more rougher, male audience, they are looking to expand and enhance his appeal as a “cool guy”. You know, kind of like the album packaging, IMO. No “hott” picture, just a “neat” one. OOoo, spacey…

Another comment, since i missed so much overnight–
EW piano is just lovely, in a bare sort of sheer talent way.I played it for spouse last night, and he said–”That’s a good song. He needs to do more like that.” He also floves “human”, and called it the best song on the album. huh.

eta: Oh…this just in from the Chicago Tribune: “We read the Tabloids so you don;t have to!”;-)
‘PEOPLE: You loved him, you voted for him and then all you fickle reality-TV viewers forgot him. Now Blake Lewis — runner-up to Jordin Sparks in this year’s “American Idol” contest — is back at you, with his debut album. People gives “Audio Day Dream” three stars out of four (Page 53), noting that Lewis co-wrote all but one song, sounds “a little [like] Justin Timberlake in the white-boy funk” on another track and “judiciously work[s] that beatboxing.” Sounds like even Simon Cowell would be proud.’

    Bully,

EW did sound quite lovely on the piano for sure. If he had admitted in the bulletin that he had forgotten some of the words, I never would have noticed it because he did cover it up so well. :D

    I hear ya.
    My feelings exactly.
Maybe for his next record, but he really needs to do more jazzy acoustic stuff like that. He is very good with that too.

    Bully,

you’re probably right, they wanted to capture more of the male audience and “Break Anotha” has that funk-rock vibe to it. Although I’m not sure if the CD cover art is really going to be something most guys would dig, LOL. Well, maybe quirky art dorks like Blake…. ;)

I really love all the S*A*M and Sluggo produced tracks (including “Human”), it makes me wonder what the album would have been like if they were the only producers? Don’t get me wrong, I like alot of the other tracks on the CD too and my favorite is a Ryan Tedder production, but their songs are the strongest overall IMO.

Chilled out Blake at a piano can be just as lovely as hyperspazz Blake. I think his vocal tones are very well suited for the jazzy stuff, even my mom noticed that last season (and B wasn’t her favorite by any means, she preferred the belting divas!). I think Blake wouldn’t have minded having more quirky electronica or this kind of alt-jazz music on his CD, but you know how the music business is. :/ Generic pop and r and b-hip hop reign supreme, and I think several songs on his CD are still a little less mainstream than what we normally hear despite the fact that it’s pop.

    Nic,

You are exactly right. Blake was marketed in the pop genre to get his name out there, and to get airplay so that he could sell CD’s.

I agree with what Bully said also. I think BA was relased to get the attention of the male fans minus the fangirling and like you said, the same thing with the CD cover art as well. You have to try and “reel” in all types of radio listeners.

One last thing about the BA video - it was B and his friend’s concept, at least the inkblot portion. And the hideous album cover (sorry still don’t love it). Perhaps B shouldn’t be so micro-managing in all aspects of his packaging but his instincts in general are right, i.e. having his friends be the ADD band and Ethan/Cisco for the docu, his selection pf producers. *shrugs* I guess I just prefer B the musician over B the art director. As Nic always says, his music art dork side is very appealing.

Bully, your spouse seems very supportive. Mr. Kilroy only heard snips one time of the album. His comment: “It’s very noisy.” *snicker*

And my toddler watched the repeat of S6 country week last night, “the singing show with Ryan” she calls it. She got really upset when Sanjaya sang and very excited when it was Chris’s turn. She thought Phil was cute (he’s got no hair, Mommy) and her favorite was Blake (no influence from me, ha).

awwww Kilory, that is so cute. lol I watched it last night also. You have trained her right. :D

There’s a short but sweet video on the official site of Blake saying thank you to everyone for the CD’s success.

Blake is a sweetie. I am happy because he is happy. It is such a success, indeed.

I noticed a lot of men doing album reviews at Amazon.

Yes, I loved the EW vid too. It’s up on my MS now. I think Blake’s music tastes are so eclectic that we can get a variety of albums out from him in the future, each one completely different from the other.

  17. 117 Bully Dec 12th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

    I can see it now–
“In an abrupt shift in interest, Blake Lewis comes out with a jazzy/acoustic album laced with acapella, and loses listeners who came to be fans because of the funky beat-inspired AudioDayDream…”

    meh.

How about,”Not surprising to his longtime fans familiar with his origins, Blake embraces the other part of his persona–bringing with it the most listenable Adult Contemporary album in a decade!”(after Josh Groban, of course)
    *sigh*

  18. 118 Lori Dec 13th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Wow…Blake tears up the piano in that EW video. I swear I could sit and listen to that all day!
