Press Releases! Plus Behind the Scenes!

I hate to start a new thread for this stuff but it may be necessary…

Fox’s Official Press Release for Next Week: TOP 5 FINALISTS PERFORM WITH SOME TIPS FROM BON JOVI ON “AMERICAN IDOL” TUESDAY, MAY 1, ON FOX - Tonight the Top 5 finalists will perform rock songs LIVE for the nation, vying for the AMERICAN IDOL crown. Tune in to see who impresses the judges and who buckles under the pressure when “5 Finalists Compete” Tuesday, May 1 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

So that clears up the debate; next week is rock songs! Post some song choices in the comments if you wish!

Moving on…

TV Guide Behind the Scenes: If the number of audience members’ signs were any indication of who will win, Jordin and Blake have the edge. When Blake spotted an “I Brake for Blake” banner, he showed his appreciation by doing The Robot….Blake laughing hysterically when Ben Stiller name-checked him…

EW.com Behind the Scenes: Of course, by then, the audience had been introduced to the all-dressed-in-white chorus line that was — and remains — the final six. The Idol who got the biggest cheer? Unequivocally, Blake. …Earth, Wind & Fire’s medley from Disney Hall, to which Blake grooved and LaKisha snapped along…Ben Stiller’s bit got everyone laughing, especially Blake and Simon…And with Randy clapping along and the audience on their feet, it was an appropriate closing to an ambitious and very long show. Even Blake looked beat and started yawning toward the end.

Chris Sligh: Blake and I met through Rudy, who I was very close to. Blake and I met the first night of Hollywood, and Rudy, Blake and I were virtually inseperable the rest of the week. When we got to the top 24, Jared Cotter and I were originally roommates, but he couldn’t take my snoring, so he moved out and switched with Blake. It was great being roommates with Blake - he really was the coolest roommate in the world. The thing about Blake is that the way you see him on tv is exactly how he is in real life…he is just smooth. He rarely gets mad, rarely raises his voice…he’s just smooth. What people don’t realize with him is that he was raised with a great work ethic and has had to work hard for everything that has ever happened to him. American Idol isn’t just an overnight success for him - he’s worked his tail off to get where he’s at. I’d love to write with him in the future, but let’s be honest, his style is a little different than mine - it’ll be cool to see what we could come up with for him. Btw, he is a good songwriter, and a good guitar player…he really is a great musician. I can’t wait to hear what his record sounds like. thanks pj!!

People.com Behind the Scenes Tuesday: There was no mistaking who was Blake Lewis’s biggest fan on this night: Ms. [Janice]Dickinson, who screamed the Idol contestant’s name during his performance of “Imagine” – and even gave him a standing ovation.

The Breakfast Update (take this one with a grain of salt):

Blake
What he wore: A Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel T-shirt under a white button down polo shirt. Army green cargo shorts, and a pair of brand new white K-Swiss Tennis shoes, sunglasses propped on his head.
What he ate: Eggs Benedict. Two poached Eggs, asparagus, Fat Free yogurt with fresh blueberries. Bottled Water
Morning Highlight: Phil led the other two guys in a a song from Boys to Men that had the words “and I thank you.” Blake was doing those noises with his mouth and singing, so the kids flocked to him. But the older crowd was focused on Phil. Let’s just say (believe me when I tell you this), that this guy is more of an entertainer off camera then on. I repeat, more of an entertainer off camera than on. He is a riot!
Of Note: One of the speakers in his ipod headphones wasn’t working. The left one.

Ok - I’ll throw in a video for fun! Here is Blake in his friend Ethan Newberry’s music video for the Chuck Norris rap!

Jimmy Walker Blue! Thanks for the video link, LB. I haven’t checked out all of those vids at moistcupcake.com. Is Blake in any of the other ones?

N to the O to the R… running through my head now. Heh.

Good to know that Blake is still a studio audience fave.

I was reading at AYN that someone from IDF who is close to Chris R said that Blake’s downloads are the top sellers at AI.com. Chris R’s are second.

  2. 2 star Apr 26th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

pj, I got Donna to PM me the link to the thread on IDF where they were having the discussion about the top-selling downloads. As it turns out the poster wasn’t claiming to have inside information; she was reporting information from an illegal download site where they post stats publicly. But who knows, it could be a reflection of whose mp3s are selling the most too. Or maybe Blake and Chris fans are just more poor than the other fanbases!

Song choice for next week…I could see Blake doing a good job of Blaking up “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand.

I loved reading Sligh’s comments on Blake. Blake’s friends in the MTV vid talked about what a hard worker he is too. Gotta admire that!

  3. 3 LB2 Apr 26th, 2007 at 1:31 pm

Hey pj, star - I just added more stuff to the post!

pj, there are more videos. I will post them later. I have to get to work soon! Also, the girl who posted that info in IDF is a faker, like Ricky. Nobody knows the download totals except the producers.

  4. 4 Sarah Apr 26th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

I think it’s good you started a new thread for this. One post can only contain so much stuff without being overloaded on information LOL.

Anyway, interesting that the press release says *5* finalists. Must have been released before the results show last night.

Also glad to hear that he’s still a fave in the studio audience. WHAT exactly are we worrying about, again? :)

ETA: Sublime this week, anyone??? Even I would stay up and vote all 4 hours like a madwoman if he sang Sublime this week!

  5. 5 Tara Apr 26th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

I wonder if “rock” includes alternative rock. Blake can do some Beastie Boys, Radiohead or something really cool that’s never been done before on the show.

  6. 6 maracaibo Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Loved all the behiind the scenes stuff. I am so happy that Blake still is an audience favorite. Well, I never had a doubt.

Anyways, yes Tara I wonder if alternative rock would be allowed. Blake could do very well with that genre. I just hope he doesn’t do a rock ballad. It’s time to rock it out and blakeize things.
Anyways, I really hope we can get to a Jordin Blake finale.

  7. 7 lady_iriska Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

About the downloads. There’s another site that has all studio recording on as well. It’s free, and it shows the number of times each song has been downloaded.

Well, every Blake song is the highest download of the week. Every week. ;)
So yeah, I can believe that the AI.com downloads may have the same stats. ;)

Thanks for the all reports. Too bad some articles claim that Jordin and Chris were the bottom 2 this week, that can help them next week.

  8. 8 lady_iriska Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

And Big HEE anout Janice Dickenson! I’d have never guessed she has such a great taste! ;)

So great to read that the audience still support Blake all the way!

  9. 9 Erinn Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

OMG Sarah! He could do great with Sublime. Franz would be great too. He could do RHCP. Earky stuff, preferably. I think the Beasties should qualify. Whatever it is, it will probably be something new to Idol.

In the “it will never happen, but how cool would it be” catagory I say Rage. That would slay me.

  10. 10 Sarah Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

I’d rather have Melinda in the finale than Jordin but I’m probably the only one. Heh.

Reporters need to get their sh!t straight. Ryan even announced at the beginning that he was going to give results in no particular order. I REALLY cannot stand lazy reporting.

  11. 11 pj Apr 26th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Tara, I’m hoping “rock” means any kind of rock. I am betting he will do something never done on the show before.

Sarah and Star, weren’t you both suggesting Santeria for him at one point?

Thanks for clearing up the downloading stuff. I am willing to bet that if he’s the most illegally downloaded, he’s also probably the most legally downloaded. :) I know I’ve downloaded all of his legally. :)

Oh, I noticed that his friends talked about his work ethic in the MTV video, too. I also noticed Blake talked about his proud papa’s work ethic in his audition.

Yes, I am sitting here at work typing commentary on how great Blake’s work ethic is. Heh.

  12. 12 lady_iriska Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Sarah, right now I also prefer Melinda in the finale.
She won me over with her country song, so if not Blake, I’d want her to win.

Can’t wait for the next week! Who knows, maybe they’ll do 2 songs despite it not being the top 5?

  13. 13 lady_iriska Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

PJ, the problem with AI website is that it only allows people from US to buy mp3 and performances.
We, international fans, appreciate that someone is helping us a little. ;)

  14. 14 Sarah Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Yes, I am sitting here at work typing commentary on how great Blake’s work ethic is. Heh.

    *Hears PJ loud and clear*

Erinn - Rage would be an OMG moment for me, fo sho. I think if the theme is really just “rock” in general, he has the ability and potential to deliver a KILLAH performance this week and have his “wow” moment. There are so many great bands out there that he more than do justice to - IF they will clear their songs. *please oh please oh please* (we need a begging smiley. heh)

Yes, PJ, I’ve been suggesting “Santeria” ever since the top 20 for him. I would DIE if he sang it - especially if he sang it while wearing plaid! ;) But… Sublime’s lyrics in general (not just Santeria, lol) may not be as, um, family-friendly as the show might want. It’s one thing for him to beatbox over ass in “All Mixed Up” in the semi’s, but I am not sure if TPTB would necessarily like him singing about popping a cap in someone’s ass and slapping them down in the top 12. Heh. Rockstar can get away with it, because I think it’s generally thought of as more “edgy” (yeah right :rolleyes_wp: ), but AI is the “family-friendly” show. LOL.

But maybe he could do a less edgy arrangement?? I just SO want him to sing Sublime!!! I heart Sublime and I heart Blake, so the two together would just make me swoon.

  15. 15 pj Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

lady_iriska, I didn’t realize you couldn’t purchase them internationally. I’m glad you have an alternative route, too. :)

  16. 16 Erinn Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

I just went back and read that About Janice. She’s so crazy he’s lucky she didn’t rush the stage.

Sorry to hear about the AI downloads lady_iriska. Looks like it’s Idols loss, but I’m glad you have been able to get the singles.

I’m with y’all. Melinda in the finale. I’ve never been able to get behind Jordin. She’s comes accross as too manufactured for my tastes. She ventures in to pageanty performances too often.

  17. 17 Erinn Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Sarah, I here on the lyrics issue, but keep in mind he did just sing Imagine. Some people find that very controversial. Anything can happen. At least he’s able to BLEEP his own songs. Hee.

  18. 18 LB2 Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I like the idea of Sublime, but I agree that it might be a little too much for the show. Plus I can see it being labeled as redundant of 311 even though Sublime is clearly the better of the two groups.

I’m actually really hoping for the Killers (or something similar like Franz) for some reason (I put this in the last thread). It would be completely different than anything he has done before. The TWoP recapper called Blake the Brandon Rogers of AI once and I see that as well.

If not that, I like the Beastie Boys or Rage suggestion but it’s also risky. I love all of these choices!

  19. 19 pj Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

Blake is the Brandon Rogers of AI? *confused* I thought Brandon was the Brandon Rogers of AI.

  20. 20 Sarah Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

LB, you had me confused there for a sec with the Brandon Rogers reference. I had a brain freeze. I had to look up the band members’ names before I remembered the dude’s name is Brandon Flowers. LOL.

The Killers would be really good too. I want Sublime though. LOL. I’ll think some more about song choices later. :)

Erinn - if it’s okay, I’d like to email you (I can see your email address since I have mod capabilities). I wanted to ask you a few questions about a couple things.

  21. 21 pj Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

Oh, Brandon Flowers. Thanks, Sarah. I kept trying to think if there were any Brandon’s on Rock Star. LOL. The one I could think if was that one southern rock dude and I didn’t see it.

The Killers or Franz… I could see either one. You’re pobably right about the Santeria lyrics, but you never know.

  22. 22 star Apr 26th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

I think I posted this idea at MJ’s a while back…”Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind. He could do a lot with that.

ETA although the subject matter is not that much better than Santeria, LOL.

  23. 23 jenlar Apr 26th, 2007 at 5:28 pm

*Ignores the fact that LB2 is wrongWrongWRONG about Sublime being better than 311* :lol_ee:

Blake should *own* this next week! “Rock” is such a broad spectrum. Almost *anything* could fit! He has not disappointed yet, but it’s time for some energy! Sublime would be an awesome choice for him, but yeah, the lyrics are just a little too rough. I’m still all over the idea of something by Maroon 5.

Janice Dickinson? Asparagus for breakfast? :blink_tb: Blake! Run for your life!

  24. 24 LB2 Apr 26th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Man, Sarah, pj - I’ve been doing this all week. Last night I kept calling Jack Black –> Jack Blake. Today Brandon Flowers –> Brandon Rodgers.

I should take an AI break, lol.

Speaking of which, Brandon Rodgers was in the studio on Tuesday. It’s in the People article.

Is Maroon 5 rock? I thought it was more pop than rock. I would prefer if that was saved for Top 3 week (yes I am that optimistic at the moment) but there’s a chance it wouldn’t be picked by any of them.

GAH - I had to change the post again. See the EW description; I added something important - Blake got the most cheers from the audience!!!!

  25. 25 star Apr 26th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

I hope all those screaming fans are picking up the phone to vote for him too!!

  26. 26 Tara Apr 26th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Yes, we’re overdue for some major “Blakelizing”. Hopefully it’ll come next Tuesday. You know what bugs me about Randy’s comments to Blake this week? He said he had hoped Blake would change up “Imagine”, yet told him during top 12 that he shouldn’t “Blakelize” classics. More double talk from our expert judges.

  27. 27 jenlar Apr 26th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

I suddenly find myself optimistic, too. Our boy just *doesn’t* disappoint!

Yeah, Maroon 5 is definitely pop. For some reason I thought that rock=top40, but it really doesn’t does it? :dunce_tb:

  28. 28 RollTide Apr 26th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

I like y’all’s suggestions. I hope that they do include alternative music in with rock. I think Blake is going to do great this week. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to choose. I would love to see him do Maroon 5 later on.

So how do they draw the line between alternative and rock anyway? Just for reference, I’m looking at songs that are classified as either rock or alternative on iTunes, and I don’t get it. They’ve got The Fray as rock, when I’d consider them more alternative. I don’t know. Oh and LOL that iTunes has John Mayer as rock too. Ummm…definitely not what I’d call rock. I’d have him as alternative too. I’m more confused now.

  29. 29 pj Apr 26th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

RollTide, I think music overlaps so much a lot of stuff should can be considered more than one genre.

I bet Blake would sound good doing Razorlight or Interpol, but those might be too obscure.

  30. 30 Tara Apr 26th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

AI just announced that they raised over 60 millions from Idol Gives Back. Awesome. Thanks to everyone who donated. :biggrin_wp:
