First, I really loved David C’s performance. Totally awesome in my mind. That said, exactly what was daring and brave about it. Not just that it’s a cover that someone else already did, but how was it stepping away from his box exactly. All he did, was what we could all do. He youtubed and found a version of a song from his birthyear that fit his style and did that version. Not very brave or difficult in my mind. Totally worked, but brave????WTF do they mean by that? Am I missing something?

Now, sixteen bars of beatboxing on a singing show…that’s brave, hands down. Whether it had worked or not, still brave.

  2. 52 Nora Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

this might get some people upset, but I don’t see why people are going crazy about David cook’s performance, personally I didn’t like it

  3. 53 newduck Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

sorry Arch, didn’t see you said about the same thing that I did about the brave thing? But, actually all of the songs on this show are covers, not just some of them. They are all singing someone else’s released songs.

  4. 54 Arkarch Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

Now that I have seen Archuleta’s performance on YouTube, I dont think it was ‘boring’ as much as it lost song meaning. Much like him singing “Long and winding road”, these are songs that have meaning. Ramping “You’re the Voice”, a kind of take-action anthem, into a Disney parade performance - yeah, wrong. He can sing! (though he did mumble a tad this time) but sheesh he needs to know what he is singing.

Just to add - I posted if he had been born in 1991 (and he almost was), he could have done Nirvana - and heh, could he have turned “Teen Spirit” into a cereal commercial… (ducking)

I haven’t voted for anyone this season, but I like David Cook the best I guess.

RE: Tonight’s performances- I really liked Michael Johns and David Cook. Brooke’s intro was also very pretty, flub and all.

I have no problem with David C. doing a cover and it was addressed by Ryan prior to the performance. Plus, he sang the hell out of it,and he’s got some serious range.

What I do have a problem with was the comments like you are the most original contestant ever, etc. Yes, he was brave to tackle the song, but someone else did the arrangement. Vocally gifted, brave-yes. Orginal, nah, not so much. That being said, I would actually like to see him win-I’m preordering the Itunes track as we speak.

    Well said, newduck!

David Cook gave a good performance, but I don’t think it was groundbreaking.

    Well said, newduck!

And Blake does know how to do original arrangements.

  8. 58 Chrissy Mar 25th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

I think what was brave about it was he did an arrangement of a very popular song that a lot of people are familar with. It just wasn’t original. Or at least that’s my opinion, which isn’t worth a whole lot. :D

  9. 59 Chrissy Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Oops, meant “very different” arrangment. I’m sleepy-time for bed!

    Chrissy,

I am inclined to agree and David C. is my favorite contestant this season by far. I definitely think he has balls when he changes a song like “Billie Jean” THAT much, lol. It’s such a well recognized song and you run the risk of totally alienating a good chunk of the fans watching if you don’t nail your performance, so there’s an element of bravery for sure. But, yeah, I can’t say it was totally original in the sense that he didn’t actually come up with the arrangement himself. I still feel that Blake was the most unique contestant they’ve ever had on Idol, for the simple fact that he was hard to put into a box AND he actually re-arranged several songs without totally borrowing from other bands.

Having said that, I think David has a kick ass voice and I’d LOVE for him to win. His recording voice is quite nice too, if you listen to the iTunes mp3’s for sale.

Kinda funny, my mom is totally fantarding for David Cook and she typically doesn’t like rockers on this show!

  11. 61 sue Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Blake sure pissed off the Fanjayas on rickey’s board. I know it is his opinion, but Blake please promote your music and cd and forget about idol for awhile. Blake was the only original artist to be on the idol stage. They should of let them use instruments last year, for real! As for David C. he did piss some people off getting the whole “original” comment when it wasn’t and original arrangement. With that said, the boy still sang the crap out of it! Like I said it was the first performance that I actually enjoyed from David Cook. Archie better bounce back next week. Castro, Ramiele and Chekieze are in trouble tomorrow night.

  12. 62 Chrissy Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

    Nic, I completely agree. :biggrin_wp:

  13. 63 Kilroy Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to the mentors for AI7. I found the theme nights uninspiring - they’ve just rotated between 80s and Beatles for the most part. I like David Cook’s voice, and he seems to be a confident performer, even when clutching at the mic stand for dear life. I’m not sure if there’ll be another “pure performer” as comfortable on stage as Blake was.

Taylor, I’ve been catching up slowly on Blake’s comments about David A, David C, and Sanjaya. The only thing I find contradictory about those kinds of comments is that he always said he was about positivity, and those kinds of comments are actually negative and judgmental, whether you agree with them or not. So they surprise me in that context. Hmm, maybe Blake wouldn’t be the best person to be a guest blogger on the AI season for EW or somebody…!

  14. 64 maracaibo Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Tonight I give David C props, he did great. He will probably be in the finale with little Archie.

Anyways, on to my favorite Michael.
He rocked it tonight. Finally he gave a performance his fans were all waiting for. His vocals were spot on, strong. The dude can sing. It really was a memorable performance. We are the Champions is such a difficult song to him and he nailed it.

Love him, I am so glad his mind is still in this and will fight to do well.
Go MJ! You really impressed me tonight. JMHO.

  15. 65 Crystal J. Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I loved David C. tonight and second spot to Michael. Like some of you, it did bug me for them to say how original David C. is. But, I still enjoy what he does. Why is it that on the nights I somewhat like Carly, the judges hate it?

I found Syesha boring, and somebody please make her stop doing that freaky crying baby sound! It is too creepy. I hated Archie’s song choice and performance. I felt like I was at a church youth group meeting (”Up With People” anyone?). The kid can sing, but needs to work on the performance.

Actually, in the controversial interview, B. said that song choices in general this year were not good. On David A., he only said he was boring.

  16. 66 dani Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

    Nora

I agree with you I didn’t like david c much tonight… I couldn’t even watch it all i watched most of it got really bored and left the room… I liked Davd a though… I thought the song was more upbeat than what he’d been singig and I thought he was entertaining and adorable!

  17. 67 Butet Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Everyone was a snooze fest. From what I saw on Rickey.org, David C., the Australian Dude, and Cry Baby Girl, were alright, nothing spectacular. David A. was just.. um, yeah, uh, just NO! If his (David’s) dad is the stage-parent control freak that reports are claiming him to be, I would be physically and emotionally worried for David A. Like I don’t he has been singing good these past few weeks, and I agree with Blake that the dude is boring, but I feel bad for him. , just the thought of his dad doing something to him makes me sad.

  18. 68 Nora Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

    dani,

yeah I know right??? I mean David Archuleta is just such a sweetie!!!

  19. 69 Crystal J. Mar 25th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Oh, I forgot, liked Jason as my third. I did like the beginning of Brooke’s song too.

Well, I doubt that Kristy will be going home with that song choice (I guess she is smarter than I gave her credit for), but who knows. It’s her or Ramielle.

  20. 70 Kasia Mar 26th, 2008 at 12:08 am

Speaking of Blake, he posted a new blog talking about his honesty and future plans. Enjoy it.

  21. 71 Kim Mar 26th, 2008 at 12:31 am

I simply adore Jason this year. I dunno though…I just am not liking these theme nights…I feel like the past two weeks have been a waste of time. I love the Beatles and all, but 2 weeks?? And having them sing songs from their birth year when almost all of them were born in the 80’s? I dunno…bring on next week, please!!

  22. 72 Desirae Mar 26th, 2008 at 3:18 am

Very interesting…I only have 3 favorites that I have been voting 4 all season so far and there the ones with the most votes on here..lol…go David A….David C…and Jason… :)…that would be a heavenly top 3. :thumbup_tb:

  23. 73 CJ Mar 26th, 2008 at 6:29 am

David C. was definitely the best tonight. Excellent! I do like Syesha as well and that’s it. The rest this season are a total snooze-fest!

  24. 74 Alicia Mar 26th, 2008 at 8:54 am

Ryan did tell everyone that David was doing the Cornell version so no one can really hate on it. I figured that was the version he was doing before the show aired. I give props to David for making choices without knowing how they will sound. David A bores me to tears.

  25. 75 newduck Mar 26th, 2008 at 9:47 am

    Chrissy,
I can see your way of thinking saying it was brave because it was a not-known rendition of a very popular song. I personally think we could have called it brave much easier if he had done the original version.

The Cornell version was soooo him that it didn’t stretch him at all and it went with current/now times a million times better than the original. That’s just common sense, not sure I would call it bravery.

The rendition he gave was the best choice of those and not courageous at all in my mind. Just smart and skillfully done, not brave.

  26. 76 star Mar 26th, 2008 at 10:26 am

I agree that DCook’s performance was smart, not brave. Now if he’d done it Michael Jackson-style, that would’ve been brave. :P

  27. 77 Chrissy Mar 26th, 2008 at 11:25 am

    Newduck & Star,

Totally see where you guys are coming from . It wasn’t particularly brave within in the context of his singing style, but for me it was brave within the context of American Idol. Personally, I think it doesn’t matter if it was brave or original-he sang the hell out of it! :D

Having said all that, all I can think this morning is how much fun it would have been to see Blake do that song-he would have definitely thrown in some dance moves! Too bad Season 6 never got a birth year night.

  28. 78 star Mar 26th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Personally, I think it doesn’t matter if it was brave or original-he sang the hell out of it! :D

    No argument there!

  29. 79 Michelle Mar 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

FLOVED David C’s Billie Jean. Snerked at Ryan clearly stating it was the Chris Cornell version (own up to the doxology thing, AI!) I’m afraid the judges might have gone overboard with the praise over originality - cmon, randy, dawg, did you forget yglabn already?! - but that was an error on the judges’ part and didn’t take away from the fact that David performed the hell out of that version. That note! wow!

Syesha impressed vocally too - I think she was just waiting to be able to sing something more contemporary and just wail on it. She’s the only big-voiced diva left, right…besides Carly who moves over more into rock territory imo. (and Ramiele, who everyone keeps waiting for that BIG performance from, but we’re just not getting it…)

  30. 80 Nic Mar 26th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

I thought Cook’s performance was brave for the reason I gave before - the vast majority of the population wouldn’t even know Cornell’s cover version (I didn’t) and identify the song as the Michael Jackson version. The CC cover is significantly slower and has a ballad sound to it, rather than a dance-pop tune. “Billie Jean” is probably one of the best recognized songs on the planet, so that’s why it was a risk to do a cover that different from the original.

But as for it being unique?? No, he’s just doing someone else’s cover but this show is just glorified karaoke anyway so it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

  31. 81 JPN fan Mar 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    Newduck & Star,

    I agree. He is smart.
He did not yet impress me this week either. - Already some mannerism.

    Nic,

If a theme was MJ, I was able to understand the thought. However, I cannot agree this time. and in the last Beatles… the cover of the Beatles thinks that there was not a risk except some song, because much different arrangement is considered to be there, in the world.
(the reason that cannot think that he still take a risk)

BTW, I think(or I feel), rock arrangement is not(or less) risk in Ai.

sorry, it’s just my opinion :cool1_tb:

    Anyway,
I watched a video, all the contestant. The stage was good. However, this show is very boring this year. I feel something which is very suspicious. There is not something reality. I think that lower the degree of difficulty very much this year? A theme and with instrument….?

Sorry! I’m Jap. I did not have a qualification to comment :tongue1_tb:
I know, this is AMERICAN IDOL!

  32. 82 Laura Mar 26th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Do I really have to choose just one favorite? I love Jason and David Cook on the guys’ side, but for the ladies, I love Brooke. Her voice is just so…intriguing (the same thing could be said of Jason’s eyes!).
