ADD Cover

Some noticed this graphic on Blake’s myspace earlier in the week and wondered if it might be the album cover. It’s up on Amazon now, so I guess it’s official!

I just noticed something very disturbing. If you click on the blakelewiscomingsoon site at Arista, it shows it’s been hacked! This is the message you see when you click on the link. The same thing happens when you click on it at B’s myspace:

    Hacked by S4t4n1c_s0uls by Garc.

    # garc@beer.com

    # We are: Verin, Ch3z, Steel_Edge, Garc, Storm, Neobyte.

    # Oh yeah… Garc ownz j00!

    # TOTAL OWNAGE!

Wow Pam, that’s really weird and scary. I hope they fix that soon, I hate those hackers, they got nothing to do I guess, Ugh!

ANyways, I just found another awesome review of Break Anotha from the Detroit News Music Blog.

    Blake Lewis is awesome.

Blake Lewis’ “Break Anotha,” which hit the Internets two weeks ago, is one of the most exciting singles of the year.

It’s got horns, strings, beatboxing, a hard-charging chorus, the bassline from Jane’s Addiction’s “Mountain Song” and the disorienting weirdness of Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack.” It’s the most promising debut single from an “American Idol” contestant yet.

The question when Lewis was on “American Idol” was how his beatboxing shtick and propensity for liking 311 was going to translate to record. We now have the answers: The beatboxing fits in well with his urban pop edge, and there’s no traces of 311 anywhere. Phew!

Lewis’ debut album “A.D.D.: Audio DayDream,” is due Dec. 4, two weeks after “Idol” winner Jordin Sparks’ album hits stores.

My prediction: Lewis will blow Sparks out of the water, if not in first week sales then in three months’ time. Any takers?

These reviews just make me more excited for him each and every day!

That is an awesome review isn’t it? :clap_tb:

  4. 104 Crystal Nov 10th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

I sure hope these great reviews translate to great sales. It’s clear that the critics love him, let’s hope the buying public does too.

Hmmm….has Rolling Stone come out with any reviews yet? They were not at all kind to him during AI.

AND, now we know where the sampling came in. I’d seen on B’s MySpace that Kent Halvorsen was listed with sampling credits.

  5. 105 Nic Nov 10th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

Sherry - it is nice to see the producing credit in print. I remember seeing it in B’s blog. I think Nic and I were the only ones that even congratulated him for that in his comments sections. But again, nice to see someone else acknowledging that, especially after PureTone only said that Ryan produced (in the blurb after the release). We all know that Clive has been impressed with him. This also is evidence that Ryan Tedder was impressed as well

Yep, that’s the very first thing I noticed when Blake blogged about his single before it was released - how he produced it with Ryan Tedder. ;) That, and the co-writing credit. I was actually surprised that more people didn’t mention it on the boards at the time, given how Blake is such an overall musician. The fact that he co-produced his debut single with someone who is “hot” in the music industry at the moment (”Apologize” is-was #1 on Billboard, Ryan has produced for some big names) will definitely enhance B’s credibility in music circles.

Ah shit, someone hacked into the Arista site?!??!?!? :P Did someone contact the record label about this?

    Nic,

I have no clue. A lot of the kids noticed it this morning at BLMM before I did. I’ve looked on the Arista site before to try to figure out how to contact them, but I’ve never found any info there that tells you how can get in touch with them. Hopefully, someone will see this and something will get done by Monday at least.

Why are my posts disappearing?? UGH!

I had just commented on the Jane’s Addiction sampling, and I had been wondering why the bassline sounded familiar. It would explain the rock vibe to “Break Anotha”.

    (JA’s “Mountain Song”)

The keyboards in BA also sound familiar to me though, is that another sampling?

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that’s been happening too! lol

Yeah, the baseline does sort of sound familiar. Interesting.

That Detroit Review is made of awesome. Spouse even said, to get a review like that from a tough town like Detroit, Music City– that is something.

I think while we all concur that the cover (while different than anticpated in a way) does suit him, and have real possibilities for appeal– it does seem to be getting mixed results in media too. I’ve seen it said it’s cool and futuristic, I’ve seen it said it was way-retro 80’s and kitschy–and even at girlstalkinsmack, up for the worst album cover poll despite the fact the girl who wrote it up said she liked it. Passive aggressive much?

Can’t wait to see the info from the show today. Live shots/video would be SOOO SWEET to get, but of the two I know about going, only one has vid capability. Here’s Hoping!

    Bully,

I got a kick out of your theory that Blake’s cover art might have holographic accents to it. ;) I can actually see this happening, since we are talking B here. LOL. And assuming that Clive is willing to shell out some extra bucks for it. That sort of added enhancement would definitely add to the futuristic theme and catch shoppers’ eyes on the CD racks. For now I’ll just expect your basic album cover but I’ll be pleasantly surprised if I see shiny and sparkly! :D

You know, this CD cover is SO BShorty when you think about it. It’s already evoked an extreme variety of responses, ranging from verrrry good to verrrry bad. It is reminiscent of his YGLABN performance, which had some people utterly appalled and others marveling at his genius, hee! So the fact that people are paying attention to the cover art at all is actually a good sign, IMO. Controversy over what’s on the front of his album is preferred over a lukewarm reaction where the vast majority of the people think the cover art is “OK” but don’t have strong feelings either way.

    Nic,

That is very true. I guess you can say any publicity over the cover is good publicity! LOL

Finally, Big Daddy heard his son on the RADIO…..Cool…Excited? Yes! Give me MORE.

awwww Big D, I know you must be proud!

  14. 114 Crystal Nov 10th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

    Awesome Big D!

I was logging in for a minute to post I heard him just now too! Well, okay, it was just a snippet, to promote their Bump It or Dump It new music spot, which features him next Wednesday. But it counts!

Okay, back to painting. Maybe they’ll play another promo… ;o)

  15. 115 Nic Nov 10th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

BigD, I’m glad you heard your boy on the radio for the first time, I can only imagine how proud you must be :). I’ve already heard Blake a few times here, because one of the Top 40 Hartford stations seems fond of him (lucky for me).

  16. 116 Bully Nov 10th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Yay! Dallas got to hear him on the Radio! WOOO! :-D I’m glad for you, BigD. It’s a big moment, no doubt. I still haven’t heard it on the radio, but I am participating in the wave to push.

Hunter at Utah sent me(again) THE nicest e-mail in return. His is the only one I have recvd, and he seems genuinely excited about the potential of Blake’s music. I pointed him in the direction of the downloads, just in case he hadn’t heard KMN yet. He said he’s “all over it!” heh. Gotta like that guy. DJs like him, who are scintillated about new music? They make all the difference in our future listens.

BigD, if you haven’t heard the news yet, Blake has won Utah’s new music challenge 6 nights in a row! Every night, head to head against 2 other new songs! That means, Blake was loved better than 12 others coming down the pike. I like that.

Nic– Thanks for joining my hologram/moire thoughtline! We just bought another album today(Alison Krause and Robert Plant, very nice) and in the trend of environmental consciousness and thrift, the cd holder was not a plastic jewel case, but CARDBOARD. Cardboard printing open up a whole new packaging world options.

(Also, Spouse looked at the Taylor Swift album and said it was definitely the paper insert that was moiree’d. He said that would be fairly easy. It’s considered a deluxe edition.)

Bully - I agree with you about the motivated DJ’s. The evening DJ I talked to really went to bat to try to get B’s song on. Both she and the afternoon DJ told me they had media advisors that selected their playlist based on national play in the big cities.

I joined the evening DJ’s (Riley) MySpace and we’ve been PM’g. She emailed me the other evening to tell me they were going to put Break Anotha on that Bump It or Dump It this coming Wednesday. I think it was likely the only way they could get it on without having to go thru the Media Advisors! So, I am very grateful they managed that!

That promo last night was the first bit of the song I’ve heard on the radio.

I leave for the weekend and I come back to these incredible reviews:)

Aw, Big D!!! I’m so happy you finally heard it on the radio. I can’t imagine being in your shoes right now! You must be so proud. :)
